As some may be aware, there was a large law enforcement presence in the 100th block of West Grant tonight in Casey.

EMS and law enforcement were dispatched to a residence in the area for a medical call.

Upon arrival, the scene was deemed unsafe by EMS and law enforcement. A perimeter was set up outside of the residence for approximately one hour.

EMS has cleared the scene and returned to their stations. A small law enforcement presence will remain in Casey to monitor the situation.

We do not believe there is a threat to the public at this time. If anyone in the area has questions or concerns, they can call 911 or call the sheriff’s office administrative line at (641)747-2214.

Happy EMS week to all our first responders! We appreciate you!

These outdated cell doors are manually operated, can't be opened quickly, and often stick which increases security/safety risk to staff and inmates.

Deputy Herbert is not fond of crawling into this space.

This is the crawl space that houses mechanical equipment used to control the environment of the jail. It is very small and the confined space is difficult to work in when performing maintenance or repairs. Additionally, parts are often difficult to find/replace due to the older equipment.

Good job!

Thanks to KCCI for coming out to do this story. Providing information to the public so they can make the decision is what this whole process is about.

The sheriff says the overcrowding is due to the county's meth problems and many parts of the jail do not meet state requirements.

PHONE SCAM!!!!
Please be aware of a current phone scam from people claiming to be Publishers Clearing House. The callers are stating you have won a very large sum of money and are attempting to have you purchase prepaid vanilla cards. We have had several reports of this scam in Guthrie County in the last couple days. The scammers have been using telephone numbers 876-871-9292 and 541-577-1670. The callers also have a foreign accent and in some cases state they will come to your home. Please don’t fall for these criminals and their lies.

This is the 911 Dispatch Center for Guthrie County. Due to the design of the building and limited space it is in a small open environment vs. a secure environment of its own. Inmates pass by on the way in and out of their cells. The public passes by when stopping in to talk with the Sheriff. Staff is exposed, their monitors are visible to those who pass by, and there is no privacy for sensitive calls coming in.

The new facility will secure the pod, where they can electronically control the comings and goings of the entire jail, via video surveillance and radio communications.

Tonight we’re going to take our Facebook followers into the sheriff’s office. Another video will follow tomorrow night. There is so much to cover we can’t cover it all in one shoot. Tonight we’re going to cover the booking room, interview room, bathroom and storage areas. Hopefully the video does the situation justice. There simply is not enough room to safely operate.

Have you met Leora, the Guthrie County Civil Clerk? Her work space has safety concerns beginning with public access. The window pictured here should be bulletproof glass with no person-to-person contact; and as people enter the office there is no protective barrier between her and the general public. She is also within an arm's reach of inmates when sitting at her desk because they are escorted from jail through her area as they are being taken to court or transported for medical care. Additionally, due to limited space her co-worker and volunteers sit with their backs to the inmates, which is not a safe arrangement.

This is an office...shared by eight deputies. It is located right next to the booking area and is cramped, filling with overflow evidence, and provides very little privacy for conversations with each other, inmates, witnesses, callers, etc. Arresting officer must pass through inmate booking to get to this office which presents a safety risk.

Please watch for live Facebook videos on the booking room, the office and the jail. Coming soon.

The best way to see issues with this booking area is through a personal tour because the picture just does not capture well. The small booking room is multi-purpose and very challenging if multiple inmates are brought in at one time. Inmates sit on the bench to the right and arresting officer must walk by to get to their office (room next to bench). Behind the door is the fingerprint station which can be cramped and sometimes the door is accidentally opened into staff and/or inmate standing behind it. People must walk through booking area to use the bathroom. The inmate lockers and dressing room are between booking and the bathroom and the assisting officer is often in this small space with inmate to their back. Lastly, there is little privacy for officers to question callers, inmates, witnesses, etc. as booking is right outside the door and conversations can be easily overheard.
