Press Release

On September 2nd, 2026, at approximately 3:46 PM, Guthrie County Dispatch received reports of a plane flying towards Guthrie County Regional Airport with what was believed to be engine issues.

The plane made an emergency landing on the roadway near Redwood Avenue and 215th Street after a mechanical issue occurred, inadvertently damaging the underside and landing gear and causing the plane to end up in the ditch.

The only occupant was uninjured.

Highway 44 was closed at 7:03 PM to allow for the plane to be moved and was reopened and cleared at 7:38 PM.

The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, Guthrie County Emergency Management, Panora Police Department, and Lake Panorama Security responded, assisted the occupant, and helped with traffic control.

Due to the emergency landing now being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration, the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office will have no further comment.

◾FRIENDLY REMINDER◾

Hwy P28/Wagon Road is still closed to through traffic.

There have been several recent accidents and complaints in the area related to vehicles traveling through the construction area, raising concerns about the safety of construction workers, local farmers accessing their fields, and the overall safety of the area.

We understand the closure may be inconvenient. The roadway is only open to residents and landowners who have no other means of accessing their property.

Please respect the posted road closure signs and do not attempt to travel through the closure. Drivers found using the closure as a “through-traffic” route may be subject to a citation and a fine of over $200.

On August 18th, 2026 at or around the time of 3:34pm, Guthrie County Dispatch received multiple 911 calls regarding a shooting incident in Stuart, at the 200 block of SW 6th St. The Guthrie County Sheriff’s office along with multiple other agencies responded and provided mutual assistance to the Stuart Police Department. Our office assisted in the arrest of Austin Reed and remained on scene to provide aid to Trooper Carruthers and assist with the criminal investigation.

Our thoughts are with Iowa State Patrol Trooper Carruthers as he continues to recover in the hospital from his injuries that took place in the line of duty.

We are thankful for the courage Trooper Carruthers showed yesterday, and we are wishing him strength and a full recovery. Our thoughts are also with his family and fellow troopers as they support him through this difficult time.

We also want to extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the woman who lost her life. Our hearts go out to them. We are so sorry for their loss and can’t imagine what they are going through.

Please keep Trooper Carruthers and the family of the victim in your thoughts and prayers. 💙

Last week Deputy Michelsen and Deputy Gries visited the Menlo Public Library for a Bike Rodeo. Bike Rodeos are a fun way to teach important bike safety skills!

We had the opportunity to practice safe riding, learn about the rules of the road, and help kids build confidence on their bikes.

The kids were able to try out our obstacle course and test what they learned.

Thank you Menlo Iowa Public Library for inviting us and thank you to all of the kids that attended!

Remember, always wear a helmet! ⛑🚲
