King County Historical Society

King County Historical Society Created in 1876, King County organized in 1891. Its first courthouse, a two-story frame structure, was destroyed in 1905 by a tornado.

The next house of justice, built of sandstone, burned in 1914. That same year, the county hired Fort Worth architect Ernest E. Churchill to design a new courts building. The two-story concrete structure served as the courthouse until 1982, when the county converted it to a library and built a new courthouse. The Classical Revival edifice exhibits prairie-style influences. Today, it remains a testament to the aspirations of early 20th-century King County residents.

To all of you who have ridden on a King County school bus heading to Guthrie CSD, send me your stories about the ride to & from school. Roy Cleve Keith told me a good one the other day & it got me to thinking, we should be working on something like that for the new King County History Book Windmills & Barbed Wire II. I'm not going to tell you his story, but we all know since it came from him it was a good one!! It has sure made my thoughts go back to what were some fun times, remembering the people I rode with, the bus drivers. So I'm asking you to put on your thinking caps & let do some reminiscing!!!

HISTORY BOOK OF KING COUNTY -NEW!

In 1976, The King County Historical Society Board (aka King County Museum) published “King County Windmills and Barbed Wire” depicting the History of King County, Texas, including the families and residents, businesses, farms, ranches, and other pertinent information. This book remains available for purchase from the King County Historical Society for $45.00, plus shipping.

NEW: The current King County Historical Board would like to pick up where that book left off and publish a new history book, entitled “King County Windmills and Barbed Wire, Volume 2". Therefore, we are interested in King County history of ranches, businesses, schools, county government, and King County families from 1976 to present. Christmas in June!! David Naugher from Lubbock came down & worked on the player piano!! We found out it could this!!! He oiled all the mechanics after I took the videos, so it will probably run smoother!! It needs new hoses & there are some cracks & splits in some of the billows! But we were both super excited!!! When we get it up & running all of you will have to come by & check it out!!!
Also for those of you who’ve lived or who live in King Co we still need your family history for the second addition to Windmills & Barbed Wire History Book!!

Thanks to Gary & Denise Beck for making the stand so our retired Jaguar always will have a special place in history!!
