Did you know that GOK was once home to one of Oklahoma's premier sailplane training schools?
Sailplanes, Inc. opened its doors here on June 1, 1963, offering glider training with new Schweizer two-place and single-seat metal sailplanes and a Super Cub towplane.
During its first year of operation, more than 50 pilots earned their glider pilot licenses, including David Jay Perry and Marion Cruce. The school was owned and operated by William Cleary and Don Terrill, and many of its students went on to successful flying careers and earned awards in competitive sailplane flying.
These photographs offer a glimpse into a fascinating chapter of our airport’s history.
More than 60 years later, GOK continues to be a place where pilots learn, fly, and build their futures in aviation.
