When You Turn the Heat on for the First Time

It’s that time of year!

It’s not uncommon to have dust build up on the heating elements in your heaters. So when you fire them up for the first time of the cold season, it’s common to have an odor of smoke in the home. However… if you see smoke in the home, do not hesitate to call 911.

It’s always good to have a professional heat and air contractor come out and do a general service on your heat and air unit annually.

BE SAFE!

“Happy Belated Birthday” to our very own Captain Mark Bruning! Being in law enforcement for over twenty years, this guy took on becoming a firefighter and has come a long way in a short time in the fire service. We tease him about finally crossing the line and coming over to the good guys, loving banter with our LEO brothers and sisters. All that aside, Bruning has been an intricate part of our department and we hope to see him for many more years to come.

Thanks for all you do for us at WCFD. Hope you had a blessed and happy birthday!

We had the privilege and honor to do our favorite activity of the year, which is to see our kids at Charter Oak Elementary. October is Fire Prevention month and we love visiting with the kiddos. We talked about 9-1-1, checking smoke detectors, Get Out/Stay Out and the big one…. Close Before You Doze.

We want to remind everyone to please close all your doors at night before you go to sleep. Closing your doors compartmentalizes your home and greatly slows down the travel of smoke and fire.

Special thanks to Principal, Jeff Ball, and the faculty of Charter Oak Elementary for allowing us this fun opportunity.

Big thanks to all those from WCFD who took time from their jobs and lives to volunteer to help with the event.

Edmond Fire Department Achieves Highest Possible ISO Public Protection Classification.

Edmond Residents Could See Reduced Insurance Rates.

Edmond residents may be able to save money on their property insurance after the Edmond Fire Department recently improved its fire protection rating. The change is due to the diligent efforts of the Edmond Fire Department, Edmond Water Resources and Public Safety Communications.

After a lengthy weighted evaluation process, the Edmond Fire Department received a Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating of Class 1 – the highest rating possible – from the Insurance Service Office (ISO). The ISO reviews and rates fire prevention and fire suppression capabilities of local fire departments on a scale of 1 to 10. Class 1 generally represents the best fire protection.

The new rating begins Nov. 1, 2021 and is in effect for five years. Many insurance companies use these classifications to evaluate risk in insuring a property serviced by the rated fire department.

The PPC Class 1 rating covers areas within five road miles of a fire station and 1,000 feet from a fire hydrant. Areas within five road miles of a fire station but not within 1000 feet of a fire hydrant will have a PPC Class 2 rating. All other areas outside the parameters of Class 1 or Class 2 receive a PPC Class 10 rating.

Across the country, 45,521 fire districts are evaluated and fewer than 400 earn the Class 1 designation, meaning Edmond is among the fewer than 1 percent of cities nationwide to earn the Class 1 rating.

To find out how the new ratings might impact your insurance rates, please contact your provider. Residents with insurance questions can also contact the Oklahoma Insurance Department at 405-216-7300.

October is Fire Prevention Month!

This year we want to encourage everyone to “Close Before You Doze” by closing your doors throughout your house. By closing the doors you compartmentalize your home, provide barriers/fire breaks and cut off flow paths for fire and smoke to travel. With the travel of Fire and smoke taking the path of least resistance, this can save a life. Yes, even for newborns and little ones. If you’re worried about hearing your child at night, go buy an intercom system. They’re cheap and you could save a life. We want everyone to have a safe and fun time this fall and as we head into the holiday season.

PLEASE …. DO NOT BURN OUTDOORS TODAY!

It’s mid-morning and conditions are already getting worse. Until we get significant rain, we discourage any controlled burning outdoors.

PLEASE …. DO NOT BURN OUTDOORS TODAY!

It’s mid-morning and conditions are already getting worse. Until we get significant rain, we discourage any controlled burning outdoors.

09/23/2021

Don’t let the cool mornings fool you. We are looking at hot afternoons along with dry conditions the fire danger will continue into next week. Outdoor burning is discouraged until we can get some rain. As we have seen small fires can take off quickly. If you see visible flames call 911.

Members of the department participated yesterday in the Edmond 9/11 Memorial 5k hosted by Edmond Police and Edmond Fire Department. Some participanted in the stair climb. It was a beautiful morning and a surreal time to reflect on that tragic day 20 years ago. Several agencies had personnel from around the area participate as well including Guthrie Fire, Guthrie Police and several others. We even had a special treat to have a photo op with Old Ranger. 🇺🇸

Special thanks to EFD and EPD hosting this great event and for inviting us to participate.

Beautiful story of a true hero.

9/11 - WE WILL NEVER FORGET

"I'M NOT LEAVING MY MEN.”

On September 11, 2001, Peter James Ganci Jr. had 33 years with the FDNY. He was the FDNY Chief of Department, the highest ranking uniformed fire officer in the department. Immediately after the North Tower was hit at 8:46 A.M., Chief Ganci rushed from FDNY headquarters in Brooklyn, arrived at the World Trade Center in less than 10 minutes and set up a command post.

Chief Ganci and others were in the basement of the South Tower when it collapsed at 9:59 A.M., but they dug themselves out of the rubble that had caved in on them. Ganci ordered his men to set up a different command post in a safer location, further north of the buildings. However, Ganci himself returned to the buildings, coming to stand in front of 1 WTC where he was directing the rescue efforts.

Chief Ganci instructed Mayor Giuliani, the fire commissioners and others to clear the area because it was apparent the North Tower would fall. However, Ganci himself did not evacuate the area, saying, "I'm not leaving my men", and remained at that location with William Feehan, first deputy commissioner of the FDNY.

Chief and Deputy Commissioner Feehan were killed when the North Tower collapsed at 10:28 A.M. It was said that Chief would never ask anyone to do something he wouldn't do himself. It was also said the he was always right at the front lines.

Following the death of Ganci, Chief Daniel Nigro, the FDNY Chief of Operation, was appointed Chief of the Department and was higly regarded for his leadership following the deaths of 343 firefighters in the attacks.

In 2014, Nigro was appointed FDNY Fire Commissioner. Nigro, renamed the FDNY Medal of Valor, the highest honor for bravery, after Chief Ganci, the legendary Chief who is still revered by the FDNY so many years after his death. Chief Ganci’s two sons followed in his footsteps.

Back To School!

It’s that special time of year when the kids return to the classroom. Some of our firefighters volunteered their time to go greet the kids this morning at Charter Oak Elementary. Sparky was also able to attend and help put smiles on a few nervous faces for some of the little ones. We wish all the students, faculty, teachers and Principal Jeff Ball a successful and smooth year for 2021-2022.

Many parents said thank you for being there and even one wrote to us saying how much she appreciated us being there. It is our privilege to work with kids and let them know we’re their friends. Looking forward to seeing them during Fire Prevention Week!

Volunteer Firefighters: A true passion for public safety

It was a privilege to have Chris Evans of the Guthrie News Page and State Representative Garry Mize come down and join some all volunteer departments of Logan County. These gentlemen did a fantastic job and got to have a small taste and a different perspective of what we train for and potentially face. They also visited with members of each of the departments asking questions about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter. Thank you again gentlemen for giving up your time to come visit with us and participate with us. Also, thank you both for your love and dedication to Logan County,

We want everyone to have a safe and fun 4th of July weekend with your family, friends and loved ones. Please use caution and common sense when shooting off fireworks, grilling, using a smoker, swimming and please…. don’t drink and drive. Keep an eye on the little ones and make sure they’re safe, especially around swimming pools and fireworks.

We wish everyone a Happy 4th of July weekend! 🇺🇸

Congrats 🎉 to Craig Martin with the Woodcrest Fire Department for being named Custom Dental of Guthrie's Public Servant of the Year. Thank you so much to everyone who voted for a local hero!😀
I love our fire department and I am very proud that they are EMTs also!!! ❤️
It has been a long couple of days for our crews as things have been nothing short of hectic. On Wednesday at approximately noon, crews were dispatched to Langston Lake for a boating accident with a possible victim in the water. Crews arrived to find one adult victim who had swam to shore and one victim who had reportedly not made it to shore and was missing. Our rescue boat was immediately launched and crews began a search of the area. One of our firefighters also responded with his personal boat to assist. Coyle Volunteer Fire Department crews responded as well, providing manpower along with one of their firefighter's personal boats. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol Underwater Search and Recovery Unit was requested to assist our crews with the search, utilizing their underwater sonar and divers. Personnel searched unsuccessfully until approximately 8pm Wednesday evening before calling off the operation due to low light conditions. On Thursday morning GFD and OHP crews resumed the search operation, locating the 55-year-old male victim roughly 50 yards from the shoreline in approximately 7 feet of water. The victim was removed from the water and turned over to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. As our crews were wrapping up the incident at Langston Lake today, other crews responded to assist Woodcrest Fire Department, Oak Cliff Fire Department, Edmond Fire Department, Government and Sooner Fire Department with a large sawdust/wood scrap pile on fire near Simmons Rd. and Douglas Blvd in South Logan County. That fire was eventually extinguished after several hours with heavy equipment assistance from Logan County District 2 and traffic control assistance from Logan County Sheriff's Office At approximately 2:10pm this afternoon, GFD and Guthrie Police Department were alerted of a double shooting incident at Guthrie Walmart. A female victim was brought to our station, with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, via a personal vehicle shortly after the shooting occurred. Crews rendered treatment at the station while awaiting a medical helicopter from Survival Flight 12. GPD officers detained, and later arrested, the male driver that brought the woman to our station. Other crews responded to the Walmart at 1608 S. Division, arriving to find a male with a gunshot wound to the back. A medical helicopter was initially requested for this victim but later canceled due to extended response time. The male victim was subsequently transported via GFD ambulance and the female via helicopter to OU Medical Trauma Center in OKC. A special thanks to the Logan County Chapter of the American Red Cross and Karen Wallis for all of their help! Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims involved in the recent incidents. Strong work by everyone involved on these events.
Merry Christmas Eve to everyone. Great work by everyone involved today on a large grass fire NE of town. Conditions were ripe for this fire to take off. Before being brought under control, it consumed approximately 245 acres, including numerous round bales of hay and damaged several areas of fence. We celebrated the holiday alongside our brothers and sisters from Coyle Volunteer Fire Department, Langston City Fire Department, Orlando Volunteer Fire Department, Woodcrest Fire Department, Sooner Fire Department, Oak Cliff Fire Department, Perkins Fire Department, Stillwater Fire Department, Mulhall Fire Department, Meridian Fire Department and our friends at Logan County Red Cross who provided us with much appreciated refreshments!
Cashion Fire would like to thank the Edmond Fire and the Woodcrest Fire Department for the hands on training today at station five. The guys got to experience first hand, the heat involved in a house fire in Edmond’s Class A burn building. Search and Rescue techniques and hose handling were drilled on as well.
It's that time of year and the heat is upon us. Area fire departments' bottled water and Gatorade supply is pretty much exhausted. We are kindly asking for anyone that could donate us some replenishments to drop them by the station at 209 E. Springer! ALL area departments are in need so if you don't live in Guthrie and can, donate to your local department. We all GREATLY appreciate it. Anyone know what the smoke is off of Waterloo on S. Pine? Every night the S. Pine street is severely smoke filled. This is a severe problem and I do not know who to contact.
Brianna’s family would like to thank the Woodcrest Fire Department for this amazing gift. It was very thoughtful for all you guys to get this for us. Brianna was a very loved young lady and it shows by many people. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts!
Hey guys, stopped by the Fire House today to Thank you guys for all your due diligence and efforts on June 6th. Apparently I wanted to stand up and I wasn't the nicest guy to you guys during the time you were taking care of me. Again, I want to say Thank You Very Much for all you did!!!
