Cost of overgrazing - disrupting water infiltration & soil function

Grazing pressure directly influences water movement in soil, as higher plant cover & litter allows for higher rainfall infiltration & lowered runoff. As grazing pressure increases, plant cover & litter decreases, soil structure decreases & sediment/nutrient transport during runoff increases.

Well-managed, properly-stocked grazing systems can maintain vegetation that supports infiltration, stabilizes soil moisture & supports watersheds.

Effects of management decisions such as virtual fencing, rotational grazing, prescribed fire, patch-burn grazing & more are less effective when overgrazing is still present.

🌧️☔☔🌧️

Heavy rain potential is highest across the northern and eastern Panhandles today and tonight, where scattered showers and storms are expected to persist. Any stronger activity later in the day could cause localized flooding, along with potentially severe hail.

**This post is outdated**

May 27th @ 5:20 AM: Good morning! We have some lingering rain showers across the combined Panhandles this morning. We are still under a marginal (level 1 out of 5) risk for severe weather in out southern TX Panhandle and marginal (level 1 out of 4) risk for excessive rainfall across the northeastern Panhandles today.

Persistent and repeated rounds of rainfall through the morning could lead to very localized flooding concerns. Stay aware and check back in for further updates.

Moving Southeast to Northwest? 🤷🏼‍♀️ That's different.

Moving Southeast to Northwest? 🤷🏼‍♀️ That's different.

**This post is outdated.**

Showers and thunderstorms are moving northwest across the Panhandles. Thunderstorms will be capable of producing moderate to heavy rain, and locations that see repeated rounds of thunderstorms could see localized flooding and potentially even flash flooding.

Good morning all. Map shows 24 hour rainfall totals from our past event. Main area of rain traversed the Panhandles from NW to SE. Some areas got over an inch of rainfall with not much rainfall unfortunately for others. Many thanks to all of our CoCoRaHS and CO-OP observers, along with local mesonet networks for the rainfall reports!
