Last night the rural Fire Chief’s gathered with Salina Fire and Emergency Management to discuss mutual aid agreements. What that looks like with resources going out of and into the city and ideas on how to improve. Why is that important??? A little over 12 hours later four districts responded into the city for mutual aid. Teamwork makes the dream work…

Salina Firefighters, along with aid from three rural fire districts, battled a large fire which destroyed two barns full of hay late Friday morning.

We heard their was a community water fight. County All Call!!!! We have RFD # 1, 2, 3 and 5 out looking for fight, bring your kids! East parking lot of the Tony’s Event Center.

A combine header fire and a stiff breeze gave us a workout this afternoon. With a big assist from our neighbors at RFD #2 we were able to get this knocked down quick. Squad’s 103/107/110/114, Pumper 111 and Tanker 105 responded along with 3 Squads and one Tanker from District 2.

As you get moving in the morning take your time. There are many broken power poles, lines in the road and downed trees. A handful of firefighters have been out blocking roads and cutting trees to make at least one lane to get through many of the blocked roads. There are multiple lines down in Gypsum and the following roads will be closed for an extended period:

- Kipp Road between K-4 and Mentor
- Whitmore Road between McReynolds and Mentor
- Donmeyer Road between Kingman and Mentor
- Waterwell Road between Gypsum Valley and Donmeyer

We have 256 sq miles of district so probably many more. Simpson Road is open north of K-4 and we cleared Magnolia Rd from the city limits to Kipp Rd.

Two good things, the situation has improved and we are being sent home after some required rest. Our Task Force was assigned night ops and patrolled the southern end of the Herman Ranch Fire west of Ashland. We split into two teams doing 2 hour shifts destroying anything left glowing in the tree lines. RFD #1, Abilene FD and Hays FD were teamed up for the night. Not exciting work, but necessary as we were able to give Ashland FD a much needed night off and made sure no further spread occurred. All units should be back in Saline County late afternoon. Just like our previous trip it was great to team up with professionals and help these communities in the SW part of the state.

We are headed back to Meade County along with Abilene FD, two trucks from Saline County District #3 and one truck from Saline County District #5 to join back up with other members of the Dickinson County Wildland Task Force and get back to work.

A great group of Junior Firefighters at Minneola FD cleaning windows, washing trucks, unloading donations and blowing out air filters.

Yesterday had some spicy moments but our Task Force won the fight eventually. The aircraft can be helpful, but 4 road graders cutting a new road through those rough hills is a game changer!!! We were happy to hear last night there were no signs of re-lights from our fire line. We are headed back out for day three with plans for RFD #1 to return to Saline County late tonight.

We are back out with the Dickinson County Wildland Task Force in Meade County. Trucks from Geary County, Marion County and Kingman joined us. Great crew to work with!

RFD #1 assisted Gypsum City Fire with a fire inside a stock trailer full of cardboard. Squad 114 responded. This fire is deemed suspicious and anyone with any information should contact the Saline County Sheriff’s Office.
