The City of Hackensack is proud to recognize the members of the Hackensack Police and Fire Departments honored at the Bergen County 200 Club Awards Ceremony.

Hackensack Police Officers Frank Caneja, Angelo Vicale, and Jose Angeles received the Distinguished Service Award for their exceptional bravery and dedication to duty. The award recognizes outstanding bravery under conditions of personal risk, and going beyond the call of duty.

On July 19, 2026, the officers responded to an incident involving a suicidal woman armed with a knife. They successfully disarmed her, demonstrating courage, professionalism, and a deep commitment to protecting both the individual and the community in a potentially life-threatening situation.

Hackensack Firefighters Michael Rainville and Nicholas Webster received the Meritorious Service Award for their actions during an incident on January 6, 2026. This award recognizes courage under perilous conditions and service beyond the call of duty, including actions instrumental in saving a life.

The Hackensack Fire Department’s 2nd Platoon also received the John R. Rinaldi Unit Citation, which recognizes outstanding service as a group.

We are incredibly proud of these members of the Hackensack Police and Fire Departments. Their bravery, professionalism, teamwork, and dedication to serving and protecting our community represent the very best of Hackensack.

Congratulations to all on this well-deserved recognition.

What a great morning in the City of Hackensack, NJ today. For the first time, City of Hackensack Fire Department and the Hackensack Police Department came together to provide lifesaving training to Hackensack's United State Marine Corps Recruits.

The recruits were given a tour of HPD and enjoyed a weekend breakfast together with HFD's Third Platoon members. We thank the Marine Recruits for their service and wish them well as they start their journey.

HFD Update:

While investigating a possible appliance fire today on First St. at approximately 1230 hours, City of Hackensack Fire Department Second Platoon members were notified to respond to South Newman St. for a "man in machine" traumatic EMS call. Crews were on scene in less than four minutes and treated an individual who had both hands crushed by an industrial press. The party had been able to self-extricate but was experiencing a large volume of blood loss.

Initial medical treatment was given by employees on site and once first responders arrived, two tourniquets were applied, one by Hackensack Police Department and one by HFD members. Party was transported by HUMC BLS/ALS who provided further treatment. The machine was secured and OSHA was notified for follow-up.

HFD also thanks the Lightbridge Academy on Union Street for inviting firefighters to give a Fire Prevention presentation this morning to their students.

🚨 Important Safety Reminder: Turn Around, Don’t Drown 🚨

With severe storms in the forecast for this weekend, we encourage everyone to stay alert and take precautions. Heavy rainfall can cause flooding quickly, making roads, sidewalks, and low-lying areas dangerous.

Never drive or walk through floodwaters. Even a small amount of moving water can knock you off your feet or carry away a vehicle. If you see water covering the road, turn around and choose another route.

Residents in flood-prone areas may park in the Riverside Square Mall's North Garage, above Maggiano’s, on levels 3–5. As well as Lot T and the Atlantic Street Garage.

Stay informed by signing up for City of Hackensack Nixle alerts. Text 07601 to 888777 to receive emergency updates. Registration is free. Stay informed and stay safe this weekend.

July 1, 1988 – Honoring the Heroes of the Hackensack Ford Fire

Today, we pause to remember the five members of the Hackensack Fire Department who made the ultimate sacrifice while battling the Hackensack Ford Fire on July 1, 1988 alarm #1177.
🕯 Captain Richard Williams🕯 Lieutenant Richard Reinhagen🕯 Firefighter Steven Ennis🕯 Firefighter William Krejsa🕯 Firefighter Leonard Radumski

Thirty-eight years later, their courage, selflessness, and unwavering dedication continue to inspire generations of firefighters. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Today, we ask everyone to take a moment to remember these brave men, keep their families in your thoughts and prayers, and honor all firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to answer the call every day in Hackensack and communities across our nation. 🇺🇸

The members of IAFF Locals 2081 & 3172 sincerely thank everyone who has helped preserve the memory of these heroes by sharing stories, offering kind words, and ensuring their legacy lives on.

Please join us tonight at 6:00 PM at Memorial Park for our annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial as we gather to remember, reflect, and honor our fallen brothers.
"Gone, but never forgotten."

HFD Update:

The City of Hackensack Fire Department operated on the north end of the City for nearly 5 hours today responding to calls related to the flash flooding and rain. Numerous residents and motorists were assisted in the area of Main Street, Johnson Avenue, and Kinderkamack Road. There were no reported injuries. Some residents requested evacuation by firefighters while others sheltered in place waiting for the water to recede.

With HFD's high-water truck out of service for repairs, special thank you goes out to the South Hackensack Fire Dept who sent a crew with their high-water truck to assist.

Another thank you goes out to Presto's Pizza on Main Street. Councilman Phil Carroll was on scene and reached out to them. Presto's was kind enough to donate and deliver a late lunch for the firefighters.

Hackensack Police Department and Hackensack DPW provided assistance with traffic control and barricades being put in place.
