The Borough of Haddonfield is deeply saddened by the passing of Eugene H. “Gene” Kain, Mayor from 1997–2001 and a lifelong resident who dedicated himself to serving others.

Gene’s compassion, steady presence, and commitment to our community were evident in everything he did. Our thoughts are with his family. Borough Hall flags have been lowered to half‑staff in his honor.

After two weather-related cancellations, the Borough’s America’s 250th Drone Show is scheduled for Friday, October 30 at 7:30 PM.

Join us on Kings Highway for a great night downtown; start with the Halloween Parade at 6:30 PM, then stay for the 250th Celebration Drone Show at 7:30 PM. A viewing area map is attached.

For safety and per FAA regulations, there will be no pedestrian or vehicle access during the show on:

• Kings Highway from Chestnut Street to PATCO Bridge

• Chestnut Street from Kings to Lincoln

• Haddy Lane

• Allen Avenue parking lot

Highlights from the September Work Session

Proposed Amendments for New All-Way-Stop Intersections
Commissioners reviewed recommended updates to Chapter 232 of the Borough Code regarding through streets and stop intersections. HPD proposed designating three locations as all way stops: Elm & Westmont, Lincoln & Chestnut, and Lincoln & Washington. State regulations allow multi way stops within 500 feet of a school, playground, or recreational facility. Commissioners discussed the recommendations and approved introduction at the October Business Meeting.

Safe Routes to School Grant
The Administrator shared an update following the Borough’s pre application meeting. The concept includes creating a continuous sidewalk along the park side of Hopkins Lane, connecting Grove Street to the Pond, then crossing Hopkins and continuing along Borough open space toward Woodmont. Estimated project cost is about $1 million (not including inspection). The grant award is up to $1 million.

Next steps include obtaining approval resolutions from both the Board of Education and the Camden County Board of Commissioners. HPD is conducting traffic studies on two sections of Hopkins Avenue. The grant application is due mid-November, with a response expected in roughly six months.

Directional Sign Request
The Commissioners discussed a request from the Haddonfield Outdoor Sculpture Trust for a new directional sign near Happy Hippo to guide visitors to cultural destinations including the Indian King Tavern, The Haddon Fortnightly, the Sculpture Zoo, and the Haddonfield Historical Society. Commissioners agreed signage would help visitors and approved moving forward.

HOST Request for Improvements at Tatem Gardens / Sculpture Zoo
The Commissioners received an update on the Haddonfield Outdoor Sculpture Trust’s (HOST) request for improvements at the Sculpture Zoo. Staff outlined work already underway by DPW, including brick resetting to address tripping hazards, an irrigation system evaluation planned for spring, a tree trimming assessment, and potential grass reseeding. Additional HOST requests include low voltage lighting, electrical outlets, and converting the irrigation system from battery to electric. Commissioners provided high-level approval for the overall concept, with Borough departments coordinating implementation.

Halloween Hours
HPD recommends Trick or Treating hours from 3 pm to 6 pm on October 31.

Redevelopment Updates

Boxwood: The Trust is expected to return the fully executed easement this week. Once submitted to the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), the Borough is anticipating receiving the approval letter and scheduling closing in about six weeks.

Lullworth: Paperwork for the tax abatement is underway and will require ordinance adoption.

Woodmont: The developer has submitted its SHPO application. Once the reviewing agency deems the application complete, it has 45 days to make its determination. The Borough anticipates receiving HPC and Planning Board applications in the next few months.

As many of you have heard, Deanna Bennett, our longtime Borough Clerk, is retiring. Her last day will be October 30. Vanessa is already settling in and working in Room 101 alongside Deanna and Assistant Clerk Laura Miller.

Next time you’re in Borough Hall, be sure to say goodbye to Deanna and hello to Vanessa as she steps into her new role.

Borough of Haddonfield Recycling Truck Fire

A Borough of Haddonfield recycling truck was on its way to the Omni Recycling Plant in Pitman when the driver saw smoke and pulled over on Route 42 near the Route 55 exit. A State Trooper arrived immediately to assist as the truck became fully engulfed. The driver is unharmed.

The fire appears to have started in the truck’s contents, which included paper and plastic materials. Emergency officials report that the exact cause may not be known, but lithium batteries are a possible source. The truck will be dismantled and transported for disposal.

Lithium batteries cannot be disposed of in recycling or trash! When lithium batteries are compacted, they can rupture and ignite, causing fires.
