On a recent sunny afternoon, the student body and staff met in one section of the J.F. Tatem playground to dedicate their new mosaic wall.

The wall was a school-wide art project, the result of a grant written by art teacher Claire Ruskoski and content-area supervisor Rob Fox. The grant came from Young Audiences of New Jersey and Eastern PA and brought artists Gail Scuderi and Kate Sclavi to Tatem for a 20-day residency.

Fifth-grade students created tiles that represented their unique interests. Our younger artists created “palm pebbles” to add texture and continuity to the project.

At the dedication, Ms. Ruskoski and a few students spoke about the process. As all students returned to their classrooms, they walked past the wall to get a close-up look!

Click on each photo below to read the explanatory captions. You can learn more about the residency in this Google slide presentation.

Thank you, Mr. Ward!
A beloved substitute teacher for many years in the elementary schools, he comes in to tell all of our fourth-grade students an American Revolution story that occurred in Haddonfield. His story fits in perfectly as reading and writing about the American Revolution are fourth-grade Lucy Calkins units. The kids love connecting these 250-year-old events with the streets they walk on!
