I am happy to announce that The Wayne Co Foundation and other donors have come together to provide some relief funds to help out residents in Jefferson Township that suffered damage and unforseen expenses related to the flood. Anyone wishing to apply must have reported the loss to Indiana 211 so I can cross-check applicants with the list. A photo ID and proof of residency, and receipts if you are requesting reimbursement. These funds are provided by generous donors through the Wayne County Foundation and are NOT Fema funds. The funds are limited, but my office will do its best to be fair and assist everyone we can.

Great work by our partners at NCCC

Yesterday evening, we were contacted about volunteers needing PPE to safely continue flood cleanup. Chris placed an order for the needed supplies, Krisann picked them up and brought them to the pantry, and Leslie got them into the hands of those working today.

Just one small example of how monetary donations allow us to quickly respond to needs as they come up. We’re grateful to everyone helping us continue supporting our community through recovery!

FSSA received approval to extend the deadline to request Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program replacement benefits for all 53 counties impacted by the Governor’s disaster emergency for the disaster event on Aug. 11. The deadline for all these counties is now Aug. 31, 2026.

Households that receive SNAP benefits who lost food due to storm damage or power outages may be eligible for replacement benefits. Affected individuals will need to submit an affidavit, available at on.in.gov/SNAP-Affidavit, for replacement benefits. The affidavit must be submitted by the above deadline and the loss (due to power outage, flood, etc.) must be verified.

The document may be uploaded to the FSSA Benefits Portal (https://fssabenefits.in.gov/bp/ #/), faxed to 888-436-9199 or dropped off at any Division of Family Resource’s office, found here: https://www.in.gov/fssa/dfr/ebt-hoosier-works-card/find-my-local-dfr-office/?fbclid=IwY2xjawT5eylwZG9mAWV4dG4DYWVtAjEwAGJyaWQRMTJNczF1NmdGMmd5NWFWNVVzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEeL47IEpzUhT7MTPwEkoVc3PCBOVDoN6urJpU9gO872z3jW0CKm1lQL46em_s_aem__9PfDOgoQ_mgJgUnvnfnmA.

Wayne County, here's a challenge! Pat and Paul Lingle have generously committed to a 1:1 match of donations to the Wayne County Cares Fund, up to $25,000. Whether you give $25, $100 or $1,000, your gift will be matched dollar for dollar until the $25,000 match is reached. Let's show our neighbors what Wayne County can do when we come together!

Donations can be made online, in person at the Foundation office, or by mail. If you would like to support a specific community, select “designated purpose” when donating and indicate the community you wish to support.

💧 PRIVATE WELL & SEPTIC INFORMATION — FLOODING

For anyone whose property, private well or septic system has been affected by the flooding, here is some important information being shared by the Wayne County Health Department:

💧 PRIVATE WELLS

If your well has been affected by floodwater:

🚫 DO NOT DRINK THE WATER UNTIL IT HAS BEEN TESTED AND DETERMINED SAFE.

If you need to use the water for cleaning before it has been tested, use appropriate cleaning/disinfecting products, such as bleach, as part of the cleaning process.

The Health Department is recommending that affected wells be tested now, particularly if there is concern that the well or well head may have been affected or damaged by flooding.

You may also want to have the well tested again before moving back into the home or resuming normal use.

📞 TO ARRANGE WELL TESTING:

Luke Beimsnyder
Environmental Specialist / Lead Inspector
Wayne County Health Department
765-973-9286 ext. 1286

🏠 SEPTIC SYSTEMS

If you have a septic system and your property is still flooded or the ground around the septic/leach field remains saturated, wait for the floodwater to recede before having the septic system evaluated when possible.

A saturated leach field may temporarily prevent the septic system from functioning properly. Once the water recedes and the ground begins to dry, some of those issues may resolve.

Try to limit unnecessary water use while the ground around the septic system remains saturated.

If problems continue after the water has receded, have the septic system evaluated.

💜💛 Please share this with neighbors who have private wells or septic systems.
