Candidates get LOTS of questionnaires from lots of groups like news outlets, unions, organizations, and clubs. Some questionnaires have limits of 100 or 125 words for each answer. Others let you write as much as you want.

Our new General Election special edition focused on the candidates, issues, organizing and community conversations happening across Washington County.

Across the country, we’re seeing the Blue Wave in action—people organizing, showing up and proving what can happen when communities are ready to compete.

Now it’s our turn, Washington County. 🌊

We’re starting with education. Our first edition looks at what’s happening in our public schools and on the School Board, introduces the candidates stepping forward to serve, highlights educators and community organizations, and gives you ways to get involved.

But this is only the beginning.

Between now and Election Day, Blue Wave Briefs will keep you connected to what’s happening right here at home—our candidates, our races, the issues affecting our community and the people doing the work to move Washington County forward.

This Wednesday at Walking to Wellness, we’re welcoming three longtime Washington County community members who are currently running together for the Washington County Board of Education.

Robin Merchant Spickler, Linda Murray, and Pieter Bickford each bring decades of experience in education, public service, and community involvement. During this week’s walk, they’ll share a little about their backgrounds, their connection to Washington County Public Schools, and the educational values and priorities that have brought them together.

📚 Robin Merchant Spickler spent 44 years teaching Kindergarten and Pre-K in Washington County. She remains active in her church and community, has faithfully attended Board of Education meetings for many years, and has three grandchildren currently attending WCPS.

🍎 Linda Murray worked in special education with WCPS for 26 years and has volunteered with numerous organizations throughout the community. She has served on the elected Board of Education since 2017 and has a grandson attending high school in Washington County.

🎙️ Pieter Bickford is a graduate of North Hagerstown High School and a familiar face to many from his years as an anchor at WHAG-TV alongside Lou Scally. He previously served on the Board of Education from 2016–2024 and continues to give his time to several boards and committees throughout Washington County.

One of the things we love most about Walking to Wellness is the opportunity to walk, talk, listen, and learn from people who are invested in our community.
