During their regular meeting on May 26, 2026, the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners lifted the countywide burn restrictions that were previously implemented due to dry conditions and elevated wildfire risk. Following recent rainfall and improved conditions, officials determined it was safe to lift the restrictions based on guidance from the Georgia Forestry Commission and Lowndes County Fire Rescue. The burn restrictions will be lifted beginning June 1.
Residents are reminded that all outdoor burning must comply with the Lowndes County Burn Ordinance. The ordinance allows outdoor burning activities in the unincorporated areas of Lowndes County on the first and third Saturdays of each month. With the burn restrictions lifted, the first allowable day for outdoor burning will be Saturday, June 6. While the residential burning of hand-piled vegetation in unincorporated Lowndes County does not require a permit from the Georgia Forestry Commission, agricultural, commercial, acreage, and land-clearing burns may require a permit and must continue to follow all Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) guidelines.
Property owners should always monitor weather and wind conditions, keep burns attended at all times, and take the necessary precautions to help prevent wildfires. For additional information regarding outdoor burning regulations, please contact Lowndes County Fire Rescue at 229-671-2730
