Five years ago, Hurricane Ida became the most devastating hurricane St. Charles Parish has ever experienced, leaving widespread destruction and forever changing our community.

Since then, we have repaired, rebuilt and strengthened critical infrastructure across the parish. We have not simply restored what was lost, but better yet have built back stronger and improved our preparedness for future storms. Today, we remember the challenges we faced, recognize how far we have come and honor the resilience that continues to define our community.

After heavy weather this week, crews have resumed work on the first bore beneath the CN Railway and expect boring operations to restart around noon today. Work is anticipated to continue through tomorrow; however, nearby residents should also prepare for the possibility of continuous construction activity, including overnight work, through Saturday and Sunday.

Heads up, Ormond residents. The first bore beneath the CN Railroad is scheduled to begin Wednesday, August 26, at approximately 7 a.m.

Once boring begins, crews must work continuously until the bore is complete, which is expected to take approximately 24 hours. Residents near the project area, between Ducayet Drive and Storehouse Ln in Destrehan, should expect increased construction activity, equipment, and noise outside of normal working hours.

Overgrown to opened up.

Public Works crews recently cleared heavy vegetation from ditches along Wenger Road in Des Allemands. With the recent heavy rainfall, this work is especially important to help water move efficiently through the area.

Our shelter pets are staying cool in this Louisiana heat, and yours should too! Remember to take a few extra precautions to keep your four-legged family members safe:

- Keep pets indoors or in shaded, well-ventilated areas as much as possible.
- Make sure they always have access to plenty of fresh, cool water.
- Avoid walks during the hottest parts of the day, hot pavement can burn sensitive paws.
- Never leave a pet unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.
- Watch for signs of overheating, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness or confusion.
