As we approach fall / winter season this is a great time to have your chimney cleaned, as well as check your smoke detector batteries. If your smoke detector is 10yrs or older it should be replaced. Smoke alarms save lives.

Starting 8/12/2026 at 8:00AM, the Haines Borough will be entering a burn permit suspension. Any fires covered under a burn permit will not be permitted due to high fire danger and increasing throughout the week. Campfires in fire rings and BBQ grills are still permitted during a burn permit suspension. The Little Boulder creek fire has been contained and will be in monitor status. From the USFS: Fire narrative from 8/9: Fire remains at 100% containment and has been placed in control status as of 1200. All personnel are off incident and demobed as of today.

Thank you to the U.S. Forest Service - Tongass National Forest for their response and hard work on this fire. It was great working with you guys.

USFS Smokejumpers will be on scene today at the Boulder creek fire, as well as a helicopter crew that will be performing water drops. Fire suppression efforts will likely continue over the next couple days.

A US Forest Service helicopter crew remains on scene at the Little Boulder creek fire. They will be evaluating the fire and continuing helicopter bucket drops as needed.

There is currently a burn ban in effect due to high fire danger. The warm dry weather has created conditions that make it unsafe to burn at this time. Please see the attached post.

At approximately 1330 hours today the Klehini Valley Volunteer Fire Dept and the Haines Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched for a possible plane crash in the area of Sunshine Mtn. Thankfully the plane crash was unfounded. A local resident reported seeing a plane fly over making a strange noise with a loud noise heard after it went out of sight. After contacting multiple agencies and local flying companies, and after a thorough search of the area by air it was determined there was no downed aircraft. We would like to thank all of our local agencies for their response. Specifically the Haines Volunteer Fire Department, Alaska State Parks Law enforcement, Klukwan VPSO, Coastal Helicopters/ Constantine Mine staff, and especially the Haines Borough Police Department Dispatchers who were busy making calls and handling our radio traffic. It is good to know that we have a dedicated group of people ready to respond at a moments notice when needed. We would also like to thank our local folks who also showed up to assist. We live in a great community full of great people ready to help. Thank you!

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable 4th of July. Here are a couple photos of some our trucks shined up and ready for the parade. Engine 22 is a 3000 gallon tanker/pumper and is generally second out the door on all structure fires. Engine 84 is our first out Engine on all Fires and Motor Vehicle Crashes. It carries 1000 gallons of water and extrication gear for motor vehicle crashes.
