Righteous Among Nations - Chiune Sugihara

Among documents preserved in the Japanese Foreign Ministry archives in Tokyo is a list of 6,500 names. Some of the names on the list are individuals, others represent entire families. Close to 10,000 individuals are represented altogether. They are among those that escaped the Holocaust in Europe.

The journey of those 10,000 individuals to safety required the goodwill of many others along the way - and a signed transit visa stamp that was issued by a career diplomat from Japan, Chiune Sugihara.

USS Missouri Struck By a “Kamikaze” on April 11, 1945 During the Battle of Okinawa.

We may tend to think of this Kamikaze attack as a singular event. From talking with former crewmembers we learn that the actual experience of war at sea aboard Battleship Missouri was more of a constant, a day in and day out experience.

That experience was translated, recorded in formal, official records and reports, written in concise, emotionless language, that requires us to read between the written lines to catch a glimpse of their experience of being there.

Japanese Emissaries at the Pre-Surrender Conference in Manila on 19 August 1945

Among directives presented to Japanese emissaries at the pre-surrender conference in Manila on 19 August 1945, was Document #1, which required furnishing of all available information pertaining to "prisoner of war and civilian internment camps and places of detention, wherever located, within Japan and Japanese controlled areas."

In turn, Japanese emissaries agreed to return prisoners of war and internees immediately, and asked to be notified as soon as possible where and when the Allied Nations ships for prisoners' repatriation would be available at specified ports. The repatriation process would be facilitated with assistance of the Swedish Legations and the International Red Cross.

Pearl Harbor will always be a welcoming place where survivors of the attack can reflect on the events which led to the war and which had such a profound impact on the lives of an entire generation.

To those who fought in the war, to those whose lives were affected by the war, their children, grandchildren, and each succeeding generation, Pearl Harbor is a place where people from far-flung corners of the world can come together in peace to honor the memory of the fallen and to celebrate the ultimate triumph of the human spirit.

USS Missouri is the site where World War II formally ended; it is our primary artifact; it is the place we work and explore, it is an obligation to future generations, it is an inspiration to millions of visitors; it is quite simply America’s Battleship Missouri.

Ford Island is a 441-acre island located in the middle of Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii.

It was purchased by the United States Army for use as an airfield for the defense of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor in 1918 and was named Luke Field in honor of Lt. Frank Luke, an Army aviator killed in action during World War I.

Air Corps flying was the only human activity on the island until the Navy moved its flying operations from the Pearl Harbor Naval Base in 1923. As technology improved and aircraft became more powerful and capable in the 30’s, joint flying operations made the small airfield a congested and somewhat dangerous place.

The Army finally decided to move its flying operations to the newly constructed and more spacious Hickam Field, leaving Ford Island entirely to the Navy.

Discover for yourself what Pearl Harbor means to you.

Called Pu'uloa, meaning "long hill," or Wai Momi, literally, "water of pearl," by early Hawaiians, Pearl Harbor, so named because of the abundance of pearls once found within its protected waters, is the largest natural harbor in the State of Hawaii and the number one visitor destination on Oahu.

Today, Pearl Harbor remains an active military base, Headquarters of the Pacific Fleet, and a National Historic Landmark that's home to four unique attractions: from the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor that started it all, to the surrender of the Japanese on the deck of the mighty Battleship Missouri, these four historic sites together tell the story of the War in the Pacific, commemorating the accomplishments of a previous generation.

Located on the island of Oahu, "The Gathering Place," halfway between Japan and the mainland United States, Pearl Harbor will always be a welcoming place where survivors of the attack can reflect on the events which led to the war and which had such a profound impact on the lives of an entire generation.
