The Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, September 8th, 2026, at the Town Hall, 499 Plymouth Street at 6 pm pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L.) Chapter 40, Section 56 (https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleVII/Chapter40/Section5649) to determine the percentage of the local property tax levy to be borne by each class of real and personal property for fiscal year (FY) 2027.

At the hearing, the Board of Assessors will present information concerning property values and the distribution of tax levy among the statutory classes of property. The Board of Selectmen will then consider the available tax classification options and determine the allocation of the FY 2027 property tax levy in accordance with state law and related requirements established by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, Division of Local Services.

The property classes considered as part of the classification process include:

- Residential

- Open Space

- Commercial

- Industrial

- Personal Property

The Board of Selectmen may consider the adoption of a single or a split tax rate structure, and where applicable and legally available, the following classification options:

- Residential Exemption: A tax reduction for owner-occupied homes; shifts taxes onto rentals, seasonal homes, second homes, and vacant properties.

- Open Space Discount: A tax reduction for land classified as open space; the discount is paid for by all other residential properties.

- Small Commercial Exemption: A 10% exemption for qualifying small businesses; cost is shifted within only the commercial class. The exemption benefit applies to the property owner, not the tenant.

The classification hearing is an important step in establishing the annual property tax rate. These decisions affect how the community's property tax levy is distributed among the various classes of taxable property. The classification hearing does not establish the total amount of the property tax levy; rather, it determines how the levy will be allocated among property classes within the limits established by Massachusetts General Laws.

The Holmes Public Library invites residents to attend a presentation by local historian Doug titled "Could the American Revolution Have Started in Halifax?", on Wednesday, August 26th, 2026, at 6 pm at the Town Hall, 499 Plymouth Street or virtually via Zoom.

Explore Halifax's history in March 1775 and learn about the town's role as the nation moved toward revolution. This informative and educational program offers a unique look at local history and its connection to America's founding.

Registration is required and can be completed online. In-person seating capacity is limited to 80 guests.

The Massachusetts State Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, September 1st, 2026, from 7 am to 8 pm at the Halifax Elementary School, 464 Plymouth Street.

Early voting for registered voters will be held on the following dates and times:

9 am to 3 pm

Monday, August 24th, 2026
7 am to 4:30 pm

Tuesday August 25th, 2026

The Beautification Committee will be holding a 1-hour back-to-school clean-up event on Monday, August 31st, 2026, from 10 am to 11 am to litter-bust the areas around the HOPS playground, ball fields behind the elementary school, and along Route 106 in front of the elementary school.

Safety vests, litter grabbers, gloves, and trash bags will be available as well as light refreshments.

Become a “litter-buster”—it’s never too late! Stroll up the road and pick up trash along those abandoned stretches that never get enough attention. You can even volunteer to help clean up public spaces around town or adopt an area to keep litter-free all year round.

The Town of Halifax is seeking qualified candidates for the part-time position of Van Driver for the Council on Aging. This position is responsible for transporting Halifax senior citizens and handicapped residents to and from local area destinations.

The Van Driver will be expected to perform a variety of functions including, but not limited to, operating a multi-passenger transportation van with a chair lift; transporting passengers to and from medical appointments, stores/supermarkets, Town/COA programs and events; attend staff meetings and required certification/license trainings; and assist the Transportation Coordinator with reporting and documenting vehicle maintenance issues and service.

The successful candidate must possess a high school diploma or equivalent or an apprentice level of trade knowledge; up to one (1) year related work experience preferably with the elderly population; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must be CORI certified (background check), hold a valid Massachusetts Class D driver’s license, and hold a valid MArtap (Massachusetts Rural Transit Assistance Program) certification or commit to completing the following trainings: disability awareness, accessible lift use & passenger securement, drug & alcohol awareness for safety sensitive employees, defensive driving, bodily fluid spill procedures, CPR, and basic emergency first aid.

Pay range: $20.23 per hour to $27.30 per hour (Grade 2). This is a part-time (5 to 19 hours per week) non-union position and is not eligible for benefits.

The Council on Aging will be distributing Farmers Market coupon booklets to qualifying seniors aged 60 and older on Thursday, July 30th, 2026, from 10 am to 2 pm at Popes Tavern (COA), 506 Plymouth Street.

Each booklet contains five individual $5 coupons for a total of $25.

Eligibility Requirements:

- Must be 60 years old or older

- Be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Section 8 Housing, Energy Assistance, Medicaid, or Commodity Food Assistance

- Be disabled and living in housing primarily for older individuals with congregate nutrition services

Income Restrictions by Household Size:

- 1: $2,461 (Monthly Income) $29,529 (Annual Income)

- 2: $3,337 (Monthly Income) $40,034 (Annual Income)

- 3: $4,212 (Monthly Income) $50,542 (Annual Income)

- 4: $5,088 (Monthly Income) $61,050 (Annual Income)
