We are excited to share another great resource that will help 911 telecommunicators find you in the event of an emergency.

In case of an emergency where you are working outdoors, hunting, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, enjoying a boat ride, a BBQ cookout on Goat Island, etc., you can now use a feature/application on your smartphone called what3words to assist the 911 telecommunicator in finding you and getting you help.

what3words is the simplest way to talk about a location. It has divided the world into 10ft squares and assigned each square a unique 3-word address made from three random words. People can refer to any precise location – a camping spot, a boat dock, a stadium entrance, a tent at a festival, or a parking spot – using three simple words.

The addresses are 3 dictionary words in this format ///word.word.word

An example would be ///grab.toasting.snubs which is a spot located in the middle of the lake in Lake Gaston.

During an emergency every second counts! Using this application is very helpful in giving the 911 telecommunicator what is needed to ensure an appropriate and quick response.

To get started using what3words, please:
1. DOWNLOAD the FREE what3words APP: iOS or Android
2. WATCH: a quick intro film to what3words for US emergency services
3. TEST out the APP with friends and family (find and share a what3words address): This page has very quick how-to intros for using the app.
