Multiple back-to-back medicals today kept both ambulances committed to calls, with crews responding to additional emergencies while returning from the hospital. One high acuity patient required two paramedics in the back, leading to mutual aid from Plympton to assist with a driver after no response on the recall for off-duty members.

Today we congratulate Harold Penney on graduating from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy. Harry underwent 10 weeks of the recruit course which covered extensive physical and academic training. Some of the subjects included in the academy include fire behavior, building construction, hose operations, search and rescue, water supply, ventilation, survival, and haz-mat to name a few. Testing at the academy included many written exams and live-fire evolutions. Harry worked as a 'medic only' for his initial tenure, but will now be a full-fledged member of our department. Welcome aboard!

The Halifax Fire Department recently conducted competency evolutions that target specific categories of our profession. These drills included hydrant and pump operations, aerial training, drafting and chainsaw use, and vehicle extrication. We do these drills to pinpoint areas where we can all improve as a department and therefore further hone our skills. Future trainings are then prepared and planned based on what we can improve on.
