Happy birthday to Allen Jones Davie, eldest son of William Richardson Davie and Sarah Jones Davie. Allen was born on February 18, 1785, at his parents’ home here in Halifax. He was named for his maternal grandfather, General Allen Jones. He attended the college his father had helped found, UNC Chapel Hill, but did not graduate. His mother died on April 14, 1802. His father relocated to his family plantation in South Carolina in 1805, but Allen remained in Halifax. Allen, then 20 years old, retained the spacious town house on the outskirts of Halifax, as well as his father’s champion racehorse, “Sir Archie.” In the period after his father left Halifax, Allen lost Sir Archie as part of a gambling debt and fought in a duel against local attorney Thomas Burgess. He joined the army and served as a major in the war of 1812. By the time the Marquis de Lafayette visited Halifax in 1825, Allen was a respected part of Halifax society, giving the keynote address welcoming Lafayette to town. He married twice and had several children. In 1851 while travelling to California, he disappeared and was presumed dead. The home where Allen was born, the “William R. Davie House” is open for guided tours daily as part of Historic Halifax State Historic Site. Pictured here; A newspaper article from the “North Carolina Journal” regarding the duel between Thomas Burgess and Allen Jones Davie, dated August 30, 1806.
