Banned Books Week Spotlight: Separate Is Never Equal by Duncan Tonatiuh tells the story of Sylvia Mendez and her family’s fight for school desegregation in California - a landmark case that helped pave the way for Brown v. Board of Education.

This award-winning picture book celebrates courage, persistence, and the belief that every child deserves equal access to education.

It’s also one of many books that has faced challenges in classrooms for addressing race and equity - reminding us why reading diverse stories still matters.

Last night’s headlines reminded me just how much harmful misinformation still circulates about autism. That’s why stories like Rules by Cynthia Lord matter. This award-winning book offers an honest, compassionate look at autism through the eyes of a sibling, sparking empathy and understanding. It’s on the shelf today in our library - because stories build bridges where stigma tries to divide.

Today is International Day of Peace - a reminder that peace isn’t just the absence of conflict, but the presence of kindness, respect, and understanding in our everyday lives.

To celebrate, we’ve added Can You Say Peace? by Karen Katz to the library. This beautiful book shows how children all over the world say the word peace in their own languages. The sunshine even came out the moment we put it in - a little reminder of the light peace brings.

May we all carry a little more peace into our homes, schools, and communities today and every day. 🤍
