Public Safety Dispatchers from the Town of Hamburg have been working along side their Brothers and Sisters from Erie County at the Public Safety Campus since Thursday, December 29th.

Dispatchers in ADI/MERS worked for multiple days straight short staffed, without relief; taking thousands upon thousands of calls for help during the Blizzard.

Hamburg's PSDs will allow Erie County Dispatchers to have a few days off to decompress and recover from the Blizzard.

Hamburg's PSDs will be working with their staff through Wednesday, January 4th.

Effective immediately, the ON STREET PARKING BAN has been lifted in the Town of Hamburg, and Villages of Hamburg and Blasdell. The Overnight Parking Ordinances ARE in effect in the Town and Villages.

The STATE OF EMERGENCY is still in place as we recover from the BLIZZARD, and prepare for a flooding event.

Highway crews have been out pushing back snowbanks through the Town, and have been engaged in Snow removal in the Villages.

The next few days, crews will be out cleaning out Drain Receivers in anticipation of the snowmelt.

If you have a drainage recevier in front of your home, please assist when possible by clearing it, or by not parking your vehicle in a manner to block it so crews can ensure it is cleared out.

We have been working on connecting our residents with many public service partners, connecting them with agencies to assist them as well as our Town Departments providing assistance when possible.

Thank you

RT5 from Big Tree to RT190 (Skyway Complex) Lackawanna and Buffalo Driving Ban in effect

The City of Buffalo is still engaged in Mission Critical, life saving missions. They have very limited services available, very limited access for emergency vehicles, and limited perishable food for their residents. Every effort is being taken to get essential services and resources into Buffalo, however, they are still being crippled by more and more vehicles getting stuck trying to navigate their streets; vehicles that have no business being down there.

Crews are still trying to get to residents who have been without power for days, without heat during some of the coldest days and nights.

Unless you are an essential worker, or involved in Emergency operations, PLEASE STAY OUT OF BUFFALO! We really can’t say just how critical this request is.

12/26/2022

Effective 5pm today, driving bans remain for the City of Buffalo, City of Lackawanna, Town of Amherst, Town of Cheektowaga and their associated villages. All other municipalities are under a driving advisory. All of Erie County remains under a State of Emergency.

12/26/2022

Effective 5:00 pm December 26th, 2022, the Town of Hamburg will issue a Travel Advisory. This means that you MAY travel on roadways within the Town Hamburg. This does not necessarily mean you SHOULD travel. Please be mindful that our snow plows and emergency personnel still have important and lifesaving work to do. we don't want to add to the list of disabled vehicles or to the lines in emergency rooms.
Furthermore, the roads that you would typically take to get to your destination may very well remain closed. If you can stay home please do! this is not a time to make that trip to Starbucks or go out sightseeing. We have much work to do. We appreciate your patience and consideration as we recover from this Blizzard.

Effective at 5pm today, The DRIVING BAN has been canceled and is now a TRAVEL ADVISORY. As crews continue to clean up, we ask that any unnecessary travel be avoided.

The STATE OF EMERGENCY and ON-STREET PARKING BAN in the Town of Hamburg and Villages of Hamburg and Blasdell remains in effect.

Furthermore, the Mandatory Evacuation of Hoover Beach has been lifted. Residents who evacuated can begin to populate their homes.

Today is Monday December 26th at 9am

We have light snow flurries, which will continue over the next 36 hours. Additional accumulation is expected to be 6-12” inches over that time.

A large number of Town Roads need the attention of Town Highway Crews. Many of the Highway plow drivers took last night off for a much needed night of rest. According to Highway Superintendent Ed Hughes, he has 7 plows and 3 hi lifts on the road this morning, and hopes to add to that total throughout the day.

The STATE OF EMERGENCY, DRIVING BAN and ON-STREET PARKING BAN in the Town of Hamburg and Villages of Hamburg and Blasdell remains in effect.

There are still abandon vehicles and other public safety concerns which must be addressed before we lift the driving ban.

We will conduct an assessment with the Town Supervisor, Police Chief, and Highway Superintendent late morning/early afternoon to determine the timetable for lifting the Driving Ban.

12/26/2022

As we start another day of storm response, please consider checking on your neighbors if it is safe to do so. A phone call, an offer to clear a path to a door, or even just a few kind words can mean all the difference to a neighbor in need.

Our 858-SNOW line is open for non-emergency calls - which would include requests for transport to dialysis - and requests for information.

Please do not call this number with requests for snowplows or updates on power outages. DPW crews are working 24/7 on snow clearance; utility companies are doing the same for power.

Today is Sunday December 25th at 930pm

The Lake Effect Snow Band spent the day over us, and it looks as though it is settling in for another 8-10 hrs of persistent snow.

Our Highway Crews spent their Christmas Day keeping up with the streets so our First Responders could access our community.

We did see a lot of driving of families and non-essential personnel this evening, with multiple vehicles getting stuck. Currently we have over a dozen vehicles left abandon in the roadway, unoccupied. As soon as we can get a towing contractor, these vehicles, which are now blocking access for our plows to maintain the roads, will be towed and impounded.

The STATE OF EMERGENCY, DRIVING BAN and ON-STREET PARKING BAN in the Town of Hamburg and Villages of Hamburg and Blasdell remains in effect. Town and Village Officials will be reassessing these BANS late Monday morning.

While some communities were less impacted by the winter storm, they will be lifting their bans tomorrow morning, while others who were impacted greater than we were, their driving ban will remain in effect for the days to come. Again, Town and Village Officials will be reassessing these BANS late tomorrow morning.

For Residents in the Villages of Hamburg and Blasdell, there is no Trash Pickup tomorrow.

We hope you had an enjoyable Holiday, even though it might not have been spent the way we all envisioned it. Remarkable as this event was, we are looking at temperatures in the 50’s by next week at this time. While the snow will be short lived, the impact of an event of this magnitude will resonate for generations.

We are making the call an hour later today, hoping to give you the opportunity to get all the gifts under your tree unwrapped, wrestle the toys out of the packing and batteries installed for hours of enjoyment.

The Lake Effect Snow Band spent the night with us, and has deposited close to 2 feet of snow in most places, which is now blowing and drifting with the winds.

The Lake Effect Snow Band has oscillated a little south, but has settled on the southern portion of the Town; with indications it will be shifting north to cover most of Hamburg by afternoon.

Plow crews have maintained the roads well for access by Emergency Vehicles, More crews are reporting now to maintain the roadways through the afternoon and evening.

The STATE OF EMERGENCY, DRIVING BAN and ON-STREET PARKING BAN in the Town of Hamburg and Villages of Hamburg and Blasdell remains in effect. They will remain in effect until further notice.

It appears we have another 12-18hrs to get through.

If you didn’t have time to shop to get your neighbor a special gift, give them the most important gift; time. Take the time to check on them, if you are able to do so safely, clear their furnace and hot water vents, and keep access to their homes clear.

Have a Merry Christmas, please be safe, and remember as bad as we have it, there are many more in our WNY Community who have it very much worse than we do. Be thankful.

Talk to you all in 12 hours.

Teamwork gets us through the storm

Erie County CPS Commissioner James Jancewicz and Director of Law Enforcement Communications Lisa Sears have been working tirelessly through the duration of Winter Storm Elliott, managing the operations at the Public Safety Campus at 45 Elm Street in Downtown Buffalo. With staff working extended hours taking thousands of 911 calls, leaders were faced with the problem of reliefs who were unable to get into work due to the winter storm.

With the Town of Hamburg being one of Erie County’s backup locations, the Commissioner and Director reached out to see if one of their staff who lives in Hamburg, could work in our Public Safety Dispatch Office.

For the afternoon shift, the Erie County Senior Complaint Writer worked alongside the Town of Hamburg Public Safety Dispatchers, processing Emergency Calls for help all over Erie County.

We welcome opportunities to work with our public safety partners to ensure the high standard of service we all deliver, can be maintained.

While we enjoyed a brief reprieve today….conditions have changed.

The Lake Effect Snow Band has settled south for the next day, as we expect to receive upwards of over 2 feet of snow. The snow, combined with gusty winds in the 55 mph range, will present us with one of the coldest nights with wind chills in the negative 20’s to 30’s.

We made great progress today with our plow crews, towing contractors and utility workers getting roads cleared, all abandon vehicles towed and most of the resident’s power restored.

The Police issued summonses to motorists who were sightseeing through the Hoover Beach area as crews worked to plow the area out to allow emergency utility contractors in to service some homes.

We understand it was tempting to venture out today, as it appeared clear and roads were in good shape. However, there is still the STATE OF EMERGENCY, DRIVING BAN and ON-STREET PARKING BAN in the Town of Hamburg and Villages of Hamburg and Blasdell in effect. They will remain in effect until further notice.

Please enjoy this Holiday season at home with your family and friends. It appears we have another 24hrs to get through before the Lake Effect settles where it belongs, in SKI COUNTRY!

Thank you for all of your cooperation during this weather event, and the random acts of kindness towards one and other.

Have a Merry Christmas and please be safe, and celebrate at home.

Apparently, some motorists thought the Driving Ban didn't apply to them as they decided to venture through the streets of Hoover Beach on a sightseeing adventure.

When stopped by the Hamburg Police Officer, they were asked what brought them to the Hoover Beach Community, to which all replied "We came to check things out down here. We had to see it for ourselves! "

They were issued invitations to come back and meet one of our Judges in Hamburg Town Court for violating the Driving Ban.

Highway crews were in Hoover Beach most of the day with a Hi Lift working their way through almost 2 feet of ice to reopen the roads so utilities could come in to make repairs to service in some of the homes.

Motorist slowed the progress of the crews, caused unnecessary hazards for the Hi Lift Operators and were operating in violation of the Driving Ban.

Please, Stay home.

For those who did comply with the Driving Ban, we share some photos of what Mother Nature did in the Hoover Beach Community.

It's not worth the ticket.

Enjoy your Holiday Celebrations safely at home.

While it may appear that All is Calm, all is bright….conditions change dramatically, very rapidly.

The STATE OF EMERGENCY, DRIVING BAN and ON-STREET PARKING BAN in the Town of Hamburg and Villages of Hamburg and Blasdell remain in effect. They will remain in effect until further notice.

In spite of the Driving Ban, we continue to encounter NUMEROUS vehicles which are stuck in the snow and/or abandon in the roadways. Vehicles are being towed at your expense. We have crews out towing upwards of 30 abandoned vehicles and a half dozen tractor trailers.

While our Emergency responders are afforded a window of reprieve, they are busy preparing for what is to come this evening.
As darkness falls upon us this evening, that is when the Lake Effect Snow will move over Hamburg, staying with us the next few days.

This snow, combined with the winds, will continue to make travel near impossible for our Emergency Crews and Plow Drivers. We can’t stress enough, travel will be EXTREMELY dangerous. Our workers can’t do their jobs effectively if motorists don’t heed the DRIVING BAN.

The temperatures and wind chills are EXTREMELY Hazardous. If you are driving and get stuck, you are not only endangering yourself, you are endangering our plow drivers, tow truck operators, Police and Fire Personnel.

We are keeping an eye on the NORAD Santa Tracker, and it appears he is right on schedule to make his usual appearance tonight, in spite of the high winds and LES.

We will update you again in 12 hours.
Be safe, stay home. Go Bills (and Steelers)

Once again this vehicle proves its worth as members of our tactical team utilize our mrap to winch out vehicles and transport stranded vehicle operators to shelter . We are often asked why we have this vehicle . It proves it’s worth in many ways and this is twice in two months that it has assisted tremendously in our effective response during emergency response to storm operations.

Our Public Safety Dispatchers are fielding call after call of vehicles off the roadway, and the operators are unable to tell Dispatchers where they are.

Please, stay home.

With the cold front already through far western NY this morning, strong winds on Lake Erie are rapidly pushing water levels past flood stage. This will be far from the end of it however, as levels are expected to rise another 4 feet!

Not an exhaustive list, but areas that will begin to experience flooding will include:
Route 5 in Hamburg, First Ward of South Buffalo, Buffalo Harbor, Canalside, Buffalo Riverworks, Dunkirk Harbor, the Hoover Beach and Woodlawn areas in Hamburg, Old First ward in South Buffalo.

Along the Upper Niagara River, flooding is likely to affect Grand Island, Cayuga Island, beneath the North Grand Island bridge at the Lasalle Expressway ramps, Niagara Parkway and Colony, Bronson, and East River roads on Grand Island.

Effective 930am, there is a DRIVING BAN and ON-STREET PARKING BAN in the Town of Hamburg and Villages of Hamburg and Blasdell.

Weather conditions are rapidly deteriorating with many power outages Town wide.

Travel is extremely hazardous.

12/23/2022

The Hoover Beach community has been under a mandatory evacuation order since 8pm last night.

Reisdents have been advised rescue personnel WILL NOT enter their community to facilitate any rescues during this storm.

Conditions will be extremely hazardous and we are not risking our valued personnel to evacuate or rescue residents who do not comply with the mandatory evacuation.

This is a difficult decision to make for us, as we are here to serve, however, we are also charged with the greater responsibility and expectation that everyone goes home safely. The decision is made with the knowledge that actions could be taken to ensure we don’t have to go in to rescue anyone. That is where the action of evacuating will assist us in ensuring everyone goes home.

Winds have picked up. We are experiencing power outages townwide.

Conditions will be deteriorating quickly. If you don't need to travel, please don't.

12/23/2022

Perspective: A Blizzard Warning is for 35+ mph winds + 1/4 mi visibilities from snow (or blowing snow), for 3+ hrs.

At Buffalo, we expect blizzard conditions for ~30 hrs, with peak winds ~70 mph.

Don't focus on snow totals. Power outages + stranded cold travelers are higher impacts.

Good evening
This is the Town of Hamburg Office of Emergency Services with a Code Red Emergency Notification.

Today is Thursday December 22, 2022 at 845pm.

The Town of Hamburg, including the Villages of Blasdell and Hamburg, will be under a State of Emergency beginning at 7am Friday, December 23, 2022

We will be under a Travel Advisory, urging no unnecessary travel until further notice.

Travel will be hazardous as the cold front comes through in the early morning hours, causing a flash freeze to occur.

Winds along the lake shore are forecasted to be gusting upwards to 75mph at their peaks.

If you don’t have to venture out, we ask that you please stay home. We also ask, when you stay home, please refrain from parking your vehicles in the street to allow our plow operators unobstructed roadways for them to do their jobs.

We will update you at regular intervals over the course of the storm. Please do your part to allow us to serve you during this challenging storm.

Safety of our residents, employees, emergency service crews, and all our partners is paramount. Let’s get through this storm working together, to achieve that goal of everyone going home safely.

Thank you

When it comes to social distancing and washing hands I’m all for it. I’ve been to local stores and everyone seems to be adhering to this. However, driving by Walmart the other day the parking lot was totally full. Not seeing the social distancing there. Stay away everyone.
I like the 40 kids playing basketball at Hamburg beach. That was cute to watch as I drove by at 3pm.
Thank you to the snow plow crew that just came down Connors Way! You waved to my son and honked the horn for him and absolutely made his day! Stay safe and Merry Christmas!
If you don’t live in the section of Sunset where they are working- don’t drive through here. GO AROUND!! I understand it’s an inconvenience but people are flying through the work zone. There are multiple road closed sign for a reason!!
Tree branch just cracked off. Blocking Maple Avenue in Blasdell. Be safe everyone.
Today the Northwest Bank located at 5751 South Park Ave will join forces with the Hamburg Police Dept to host a car seat safety inspection. Stop by our office from 12-4pm today and get your seat checked for proper install and recalls. We will have snacks, juice boxes and give aways for the kids.

From one LEO to another, thank you for all your hard work. Without this technology, however flawed it may be, people in the immediate areas would have been "in the dark". Stay safe!
Awesome job explaining all of the what if's Sean !!
Cloverbank Road railroad crossing?
Was a text alert about the Code Red issued last night? I ask because I got nothing on my phone - I only knew because my in-laws in Lackawanna received a text alert from Lackawanna and sent me a text. I didn't get it until after I was home - I had been very close to the search area with my kids at the time all this was happening.
I’m sharing this for my friend Sarah Mugel. This is her post.

I am using my page to notify our friends of a dangerous condition at Taylor Road Park in Hamburg NY (and hopefully someone can help me get this on the Taylor Road Park page because I am having difficulty with that). On February 7, 2018, our 9-month old puppy, Cinnamon got her leg trapped in a hidden foothold trap set at the edge of the park near the golf course (not a remote or "backwoods" location). If you aren't familiar with this, think a metal spring trap that immediately and forcefully closes when stepped on or otherwise triggered. Jon Jonathan A Mugel was able to free her (my hero!) and she miraculously is not hurt, somehow (thank you to the angels looking out for her). I put signs up at the park and notified the Town (who hasn't responded yet; I'm following up on that). I also notified a earth science group that frequently uses the park for educational purposes with young children. And I plan to notify the DEC. But please, if you or any of your friends use this park, BE CAREFUL!! I don't know when or if we will be able to go back - it's a dog friendly park. And, even if cute little puppies don't melt your heart, think of how terrible this would be for children or even adults to get caught. Thanks all for listening.
