A more serious fire was avoided tonight when homeowners in our district came home to find smoke from the rear of their detached garage. They used a dry-chemical extinguisher on an incipient fire in an outside, covered storage bin with a hole burnt through the top.

Scranton 9 (Chief) and 9-2 (Second Assistant Chief) arrived and using a thermal imaging camera and hand tools dismantled the powder-covered material. Stacked bags of peat moss were found to contain a concentrated area of heat at or near ignition temperature, with no other apparent source of ignition. The crew from Scranton Engine 1 used the garden hose to thoroughly soak the heated material and separate it from other combustibles.

It appeared the peat moss, kept through the summer in a hot, mostly unventilated storage bin, underwent auto ignition. In other words, the fire started itself. Fortunately the couple residing at the house had returned at the perfect time to discover the fire without it growing beyond the storage unit, and there was no damage to the garage or other nearby property.

We are accepting bids for snow plowing/removal for the 2026-2027 season for both stations. Bids must be in by October 5th.

Requirements:

Contract will be from 11/1/26-3/31/27
Lots will be plowed with 2 or more inches of snow. Preferably before 7:00am.
Must have High Lift/Dump Truck service availability in case snow has to be removed. This will be at additional cost and pricing will be included with the bid.
Must be able to salt the parking lots upon request. This will also be at additional cost and pricing will be included in bid.
Contractor will be responsible for property damage within reason. Insurance coverage proof will be provided with bid.
Apparatus bay doors will be cleared within reason but contractor will not be responsible for clearing of man doors and sidewalks.

We are gearing up for our Community Days event happening this coming weekend. We have a huge lineup of neat things to enjoy.

Friday evening is the car cruise, which will feature a chassis dyno challenge, pinstriper extrordinaire Jessica Indessi, an actual train will be on hand for your viewing, and we have DION DAWKINS of the Buffalo Bills attending also! Show him some love and support his charity also! Throw in the live music of "One Eyed Jack" and all the great food and drinks and its gonna be a party.
So bring your classic vehicle, reserve your spot for the chassis dyno challenge (see the flyer and contact Greg for details) and enjoy the show.
It doesnt stop there either! Saturday brings a chicken BBQ, live music in the evening aa well as food and drink. Its a weekend of fun and good times. See you there!

Tyler was an employee for Town of Hamburg EMS and was one of the first two members to work on our ambulance when we started using their services. Tyler, was a great guy. He would come in daily with a smile on his face. He sat with us at our morning breakfast sessions and fit in perfectly. As described in the post from Seneca Hose, he was someone who genuinely cared. We mourn the loss of Tyler and offer our condolences to his immediate family, his Fire Services family and all of his friends.

It is with great sadness that we notify you of the loss of one of our members, Tyler Schenck, who passed away in an accident last evening.

Tyler was not only a valued and respected member of our organization, but also a member of the Erie County Department of Health, EMS Division; the Erie County Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Services, Hazardous Materials Response Team; and Hamburg EMS, as well as a former member of Reserve Fire Company.

At approximately 2200 hours on August 22, 2026, emergency personnel responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle accident in the Town of Elma. Members of the Blossom Vol. Fire Company, Spring Brook Fire District #1, Erie County EMS, and the Erie County Sheriff’s Office responded and worked together to manage the incident.

Tyler was described by those who knew and worked alongside him as lovable, lighthearted, and a passionate EMS provider who genuinely cared about everyone he met. During his time serving in the fire and EMS communities, Tyler made a meaningful impact on his coworkers, fellow first responders, and the people he served. His loss will be deeply felt throughout our public safety, fire, and EMS communities. Our deepest condolences go out to the Schenck family, Tyler’s friends, and his fellow members during this incredibly difficult time.
