The Hamden Fire Retirees Assn., Inc. was organized 16 years ago this past June to promote members’ fraternal and social fellowship, to share information that may be beneficial or of interest to its members, and to preserve the historical record of the Hamden Fire Department for the benefit of all.

For about the last dozen years our website has presented an annual YouTube tribute to all career Hamden firefighters who have passed since the Hamden Fire Department was established as an official town entity one hundred years ago.

In connection with the 2025 centennial celebration of the Hamden Fire Department, the members of the Hamden Fire Retirees Association, Inc. would like to share the most recent revision of their memorial presentation, “We Remember,” which was uploaded only a few days ago. Your comments are welcome.

The 2nd Sunday Spinners demonstrate wool spinning at the Dickerman House on Sunday, Aug 10

08/06/2025

At the Dickerman House this Sunday….
The group “2nd Sunday Spinners” is demonstrating wool spinning on Sunday August 10th from 1-4 P.M. The group carries on the centuries old tradition of spinning wool into yarn, as well as knitting, crocheting and other fiber arts.
The spinning of wool in America was a vital process for the colonists, especially during the colder months of the year. It was very labor intensive, as the wool had to be gathered from sheep, typically in the spring, and then undergo several steps to prepare it. The process involved shearing, sorting, washing, picking, carding, spinning, dyeing, and weaving.
Stop by and learn about this fascinating art and be sure to check out the textile room inside the house. The demonstration will take place rain or shine.

History of Hamden Street names - presentation by our own Paul Saubestre. Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at 7:00 PM at Miller Library Complex (Senior Center), 2901 Dixwell Ave.

Topics: How did the paths taken by the Quinnipiac tribe influence the way our streets are laid out today? Why did suburban development of Hamden begin in the 1860s, long before anyone had an automobile? Why were the plans for subdivisions in the early twentieth century sometimes a little too ambitious?

Enter at the rear of the building. It will be in the Senior Center Social Hall. Sponsored by Hamden Historical Society. Refreshments will be served.
