🌈 Happy Pride Month from TTASC! June is a time to celebrate love, identity, and community — and for us in the prevention field, it's also a powerful reminder of why inclusive, affirming prevention work matters. LGBTQIA+ youth face unique risks, but with the right support systems in place, they thrive. All month long, we'll be sharing resources, training highlights, and wellness tips centered on equity, inclusion, and prevention. Because protection and belonging go hand in hand. 💜

Ask the Question, Save a Life: Get Trained in QPR

In the world of prevention, we know that many people want to help someone in crisis but often don't know what to say. That’s where QPR comes in.

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer—three simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from su***de. Just as CPR is an emergency response to a physical crisis, QPR is an emergency response to a mental health crisis.

What you learn through the QPR Institute:

❓ Question: How to recognize the warning signs of su***de and ask the question directly.

🗣️ Persuade: How to offer hope and persuade someone to get help.

📲 Refer: How to refer someone to the appropriate local resources and professional care.

Su***de prevention is not just for clinicians; it’s a community-wide responsibility. Whether you are a parent, a teacher, a colleague, or a friend, QPR training gives you the tools to intervene with confidence and compassion.

In prevention science, we talk a lot about environmental factors—but what about our internal environment? Today, we’re focusing on Grounding, a technique to help stay calm when the workday feels overwhelming.

Wellness Tip: Try the 5-4-3-2-1 Technique. Acknowledge:

5 things you see

4 things you can touch

3 things you hear

2 things you can smell

1 thing you can taste

This simple sensory check-in pulls your brain out of "stress mode" and back into the present moment.

Today, we pause to honor and remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage and selflessness represent the highest form of dedication to community and nation.

At the Prevention Training & Technical Assistance Service Center, we also recognize the profound impact that loss and service can have on the mental health of families and veterans. As we spend today with our loved ones, let’s hold space for reflection, gratitude, and support for those who carry the legacy of these heroes forward.

In observance of the holiday, our offices are closed today so our team can reflect and recharge. We look forward to continuing our work in prevention and wellness with you tomorrow.

Wishing you a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

Su***de prevention is a mission that requires all of us. We are proud to highlight the vital work of the Connecticut Su***de Advisory Board (CTSAB), the state’s lead advisory body dedicated to eliminating su***de by instilling hope across the lifespan.

The CTSAB isn't just a board; it’s a diverse network of advocates, educators, and leaders working tirelessly to promote the "1 Word, One Voice, One Life" campaign. Their mission reminds us that we all have the power to be the one to start a conversation that saves a life.

How the CTSAB Supports Connecticut:

🗺️ Statewide Strategy: Leading the state’s plan for su***de prevention, intervention, and postvention.

📚 Resources & Training: Providing free materials and evidence-based training for schools, workplaces, and community members.

🛡️ Zero Su***de Initiative: Working with health systems to ensure safer care for those at risk.

📢 Awareness: Promoting the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline as a 24/7 resource for anyone in need.

Whether you are looking for data, support for a loved one, or ways to get involved in your local community, the CTSAB is the central hub for prevention in our state.

Physical activity isn’t just about fitness; it’s a powerful tool for regulating mood and reducing anxiety. On this , we’re moving for our minds.

Wellness Tip: Try a "Walking Meeting." If you have a phone consultation or a brainstorming session, take it outside. The combination of fresh air and bilateral movement (walking) helps process stress and sparks creativity.

Your Gateway to Care: Discovering DMHAS Resources

In Connecticut, we are fortunate to have a dedicated department committed to the health and recovery of every resident. The Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) serves as our state’s primary resource for promoting recovery and ensuring that high-quality prevention and treatment systems are accessible to all.

Whether you are seeking help for yourself, a loved one, or looking for prevention data to support your community work, DMHAS is the foundation for behavioral health services in CT.

What DMHAS Provides for Our Communities:

🏥 Treatment & Recovery: A comprehensive network of services for mental health and substance use disorders.

🛡️ Prevention First: Support for programs—like ours here at PTTASC—that aim to stop challenges before they start.

📞 Access to Care: Direct links to the Action Line and mobile crisis services for immediate help.

📊 Education & Advocacy: Up-to-date information on emerging trends and state-wide wellness initiatives.

We are proud to work alongside DMHAS to build a Connecticut where everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy, productive life.
