🏡 PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT: Can We Find You in the Dark? 🏡
Imagine it is 2:00 AM. A medical emergency is happening inside your home, the 9-1-1 tones have dropped, and our ambulance is riding down your street. Our medics are ready, our lights are flashing, and every single second counts. But as we slow down to look for your home, we hit a major roadblock: We can’t see your house number. Finding a home in the dark, during a heavy storm, or down a long rural Loudoun County driveway is one of the biggest challenges our volunteer crews face. If we can't see your numbers, we lose precious time turning around or searching with spotlights. Take a quick walk to the end of your driveway today and ask yourself these three critical questions:
Are the numbers big and bold? House numbers should be at least 4 inches tall so they can be read easily from a moving emergency vehicle.
Are they reflective? Plain black or brass numbers completely disappear at night. Ensure your numbers contrast sharply with their background and catch our headlights.
Are they hidden by landscaping? Tree branches, overgrown bushes, and summer porch hanging plants can easily block our view from the road.
Pro-Tip for Long Driveways: If your home sits far back from the road, your house numbers should be posted clearly on a mailbox or a dedicated post right at the entrance of the driveway.
