When you see the lights and sirens, you’re seeing the tip of the iceberg.

What you don’t always see are the hours of training, certifications, equipment checks, meetings, compliance reporting, budgeting, IT systems, fundraising, building maintenance, recruiting, and everything in between that keeps our station running.

Our volunteers carry far more than gear — they carry the responsibility of sustaining an organization that serves this community every single day.

Some respond to emergencies.
Some build the structure that makes those responses possible.
Every role matters.

We are incredibly grateful for what they give.

And if you’ve ever considered serving your community in a meaningful way — whether through response, leadership, logistics, fundraising, technology, or support — there is a place for you here.

Randy Breton, who passed away in 2020, was a life member here at Company 17 and had an amazing impact on EMS in Loudoun. We are happy to see that his legacy still lives on.

Before the early 1990s, Ashburn operated solely as a fire station. Thanks to the dedication and vision of five volunteers from Ashburn, Sterling, and Hamilton, the EMS program was established and began serving the community.

At the Annual AVFRD Awards Banquet on February 7, we recognized Assistant Chief Dawn Kilpatrick, Chief Melvin Byrne, Robin Davis, Jim Burke, and Randy Breton. Dawn is no longer with us, but was honored for her lasting impact. Melvin, Robin, and Jim were present, and Trudy attended to accept the award on behalf of her husband, Randy.
