Today at approximately 4:48 p.m., the Hamilton Police Department responded alongside the Hamilton Fire Department to Walmart, located in the 1700 block of Military Street South, following a report of a possible fire with evacuations underway.

Upon arrival, responders observed and confirmed smoke inside the building. Officers began assisting Walmart employees with evacuating the store and securing all entrances and exits. A police officer and fire personnel entered the building and conducted a sweep to ensure everyone had safely evacuated while also attempting to locate the source of the smoke.

After assessing the building, firefighters determined that there was no active fire. Hamilton Fire Department and maintenance personnel continued evaluating the situation, and the smoke appeared to have resulted from a mechanical issue. No fire was located.

During a large emergency response at a commercial building, particularly one occupied by a significant number of people, first responders must secure the area, restrict access, and begin assessing for any additional threats or hazards until the building can be thoroughly evaluated and declared safe.

We appreciate the Walmart employees who remained professional and worked alongside first responders until all customers were safely evacuated.

Any questions regarding the nature or cause of the apparent mechanical issue should be directed to the appropriate Walmart personnel.

A good citizen turned in what appears to be a man’s wedding band that was found at the walking track.

Uncertified applicants must be at least 21 years of age, be a U.S. citizen, possess a high school diploma or GED, hold a valid driver’s license, successfully pass background, medical, psychological, APOSTC physical ability and physical agility testing, and complete Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) basic academy training.

Certified officers must hold a current APOSTC certification, be in good standing with no revocations or suspensions, successfully pass a background investigation, medical and psychological evaluations, drug screening, and meet all additional departmental hiring guidelines.

Students are back at school in Hamilton!

And our two assigned School Police Officers are looking a little different this year. Their patrol units now feature “School Police Officers” lettering in Hamilton Aggie Maroon, incorporated into our traditional HPD stripe scheme, along with an added Aggie mascot on each side.

A little added school pride for the officers dedicated to protecting our students, faculty, and staff.

“Today, I’m honored to share that I’ve completed the Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police (AACOP) 240-Hour Certified Law Enforcement Executive Program (CLEEP) and have been awarded the Certified Law Enforcement Executive (CLEE) designation through the Alabama Peace Officers’ Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC).

The CLEE program is a four-level leadership development program that focuses on leadership, ethics, organizational management, and the professional development of law enforcement executives.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from some of the best law enforcement leaders in our state and, just as importantly, to build friendships with those exceptional leaders. Those relationships have been just as valuable as the training itself, providing a network of professionals who are always willing to share knowledge, ideas, and support one another.

This accomplishment isn’t about a title or adding letters behind my name; it’s about becoming a better leader for the officers I serve, the City of Hamilton, and the community that has placed its trust in me. I’ll continue striving to learn, grow, and bring the very best to the Hamilton Police Department every day.
