Our Board of Directors recently had the pleasure of hearing from a participant of our Neighbors Who Care: Home Repair program, Dayla. Hereās what she shared with us:
ā15 years ago I invested in one of the biggest gifts I could have imagined: my home. Over the years, that house has been there through so many stages of my life.
But for all of those 15 years, it still had its original windows and siding. And as you can imagine, after that much time they were definitely showing their age.
Then, right around the time my newborn baby was growing into a toddler, I was given the opportunity to have some home improvements done by SELF at no cost to me.
The timing honestly couldnāt have been better.
I was getting ready to enter a new phase of motherhood. Suddenly I wasnāt only thinking about whether my home worked for me. I was thinking about whether it was warm enough, safe enough, and comfortable enough for my baby.
Before the upgrades, the old windows were drafty during an Ohio winter. You could feel the cold air coming through them. Now I donāt have to worry about keeping us warm because cold air is pouring in around old windows.
And it gave me a sense of security that I didnāt have before. I can go to sleep at night knowing that my windows and doors are secure and my home feels safer for both me and my daughter.
But itās also the little things.
When the weather is beautiful, I can actually open my windows and let a breeze come through the house. I can enjoy fresh air with my baby and appreciate my home in ways I couldnāt before.
The new siding transformed the outside, too! This is the same house Iāve had for 15 years, but now it feels refreshed and ready for this next chapter of my life.
A window or a piece of siding might seem like a simple part of a house, but when itās your home, those things mean warmth. They mean safety. They mean comfort. And when you are a parent, those things mean more than they ever did before.
SELF didnāt just improve the way my house looks. They improved the way it feels to live there.
Iām incredibly grateful that, as I navigate motherhood, they help me make the home Iāve loved for 15 years a safer, warmer, more comfortable place for my family to grow.
Thank you SELF for all of the peace of mind.ā
