Pull To The Right for Sirens and Lights!

DO’S

Remain calm and scan your mirrors to locate the emergency vehicle.

Pull to the right edge or curb of the roadway and come to a complete stop.

Stay stopped until the emergency vehicle (and any following units) has completely passed.

On undivided multi-lane roads, traffic in both directions must pull to the right and stop (emergency vehicles may need to use opposing lanes to pass).

Signal your intentions so the emergency driver knows you see them and are moving over.

If stopped at an intersection or red light, remain in your lane and stay completely stopped. Emergency drivers will maneuver around you.

DON’TS

Don't panic or slam on your brakes abruptly.

Don't pull into an intersection or run a red light to get out of the way.

Don't stop in the middle of a travel lane when shoulder or curb space is available to your right.

Don't make sudden left turns across traffic into driveways or side streets.

Don't race ahead to clear an intersection or beat an emergency vehicle through a green light.

Don't tail an emergency vehicle—maintain a safe distance of at least 500 feet.

PRACTICE THE "MOVE OVER" LAW
When approaching stationary emergency vehicles parked on the side of the road with emergency lights active, move over at least one lane away from the scene if safe to do so. If you cannot safely change lanes, slow down significantly below the posted speed limit and proceed with caution.

It’s a beautiful morning at Hamilton Fire!

Recruits Miller and Bragwell started their morning with some good old-fashioned SCBA consumption training. These two have been putting in the work over the past few weeks as they prepare for recruit school, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon.

They’ll continue pushing themselves, building their skills, and putting in the work between now and the start of recruit school in September.

We’re proud of the effort these recruits are putting in, and we’re looking forward to seeing them continue to grow into the firefighters they’re working hard to become.

Awesome to the see the response back from our staff. Walmart did what they were suppose to, clear the store, keep everyone out until all is safe. Thanks to our partners, at HPD for securing the store and the perimeter while the investigation of the issue was conducted. Turns out when a belt in a cooling unit breaks and ruptures a Freon line, it causes issues. Thank you to everyone for your cooperation.

Today at approximately 4:48 p.m., the Hamilton Police Department responded alongside the Hamilton Fire Department to Walmart, located in the 1700 block of Military Street South, following a report of a possible fire with evacuations underway.

Upon arrival, responders observed and confirmed smoke inside the building. Officers began assisting Walmart employees with evacuating the store and securing all entrances and exits. A police officer and fire personnel entered the building and conducted a sweep to ensure everyone had safely evacuated while also attempting to locate the source of the smoke.

After assessing the building, firefighters determined that there was no active fire. Hamilton Fire Department and maintenance personnel continued evaluating the situation, and the smoke appeared to have resulted from a mechanical issue. No fire was located.

During a large emergency response at a commercial building, particularly one occupied by a significant number of people, first responders must secure the area, restrict access, and begin assessing for any additional threats or hazards until the building can be thoroughly evaluated and declared safe.

We appreciate the Walmart employees who remained professional and worked alongside first responders until all customers were safely evacuated.

Any questions regarding the nature or cause of the apparent mechanical issue should be directed to the appropriate Walmart personnel.

We are honored to be recognized as a Gold Helmet Department for having many of our firefighters enrolled in the for Cancer. If you happen to see our three newest recruits out and about with an orange rope attached to them, you may be wondering why.

This rope is more than just a piece of equipment—it’s a symbol of responsibility and accountability. From the moment they receive it, recruits are expected to keep it with them at all times while at work and around the fire station. They are responsible for taking care of it and ensuring they never leave it behind.

Why? Because in the fire service, we never leave one another behind. This simple tradition serves as a daily reminder that accountability starts long before the emergency call comes in. The habits built today become the actions that save lives tomorrow.

If you happen to find an orange recruit rope that has been left behind, we ask that you kindly bring it by the fire station and hand it to the shift lieutenant. They’ll make sure it’s returned to its rightful owner—who will likely be reminded of the importance of accountability.
