Minor fall burning is regulated by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality based on ventilation and air quality from September 1 to November 30. The restrictions can vary by county and even by elevation depending on the day’s conditions.

The rules that govern minor fall burning are updated every weekday at 4PM by the DEQ.

The guidelines that govern open burning change on December 1. Minor burners are asked to submit burn requests online at:

DEQ strives to provide residents every opportunity to burn without endangering public health. Open burning can have serious health effects if released to the atmosphere during times of poor ventilation.
