Our Tangipahoa Chamber hosted Senator John Kennedy today and I was honored to represent the City of Hammond when I shook his hand. It was great to hear how he and his staff have worked to help our community whether it’s North Oaks Health, Tangipahoa Parish Government or Southeastern Louisiana University. He’s worked to secure funding for important needs and worked through bureaucratic red tape. He brought some of his signature one liners and got a lot of laughs.

In honor of the dearly departed Dolly Parton, I have some Hammond history to share with you. She played at the Ponchatoula Hayride a few times in the 1960’s and when she was in town she would stay at the Magnolia Inn in Hammond. My family owned and ran that motel back then. My dad recalls being a teenager when she stayed there. Many years later a reporter called my grandmother to verify a rumor about Dolly and Porter Wagoner at the motel. Dad says that his mother was asked if Dolly and Porter stayed in separate rooms and although my grandmother didn’t know or care much about Dolly, she maintained and defended her virtue by confirming that they of course, had separate rooms.

Dolly was a gem and the world lost someone so special today.

Building a solo law practice in Hammond taught me how to solve tough problems, negotiate effectively, and stand up for people when they need it most. Now, I’m ready to bring those exact skills to work for our entire city.
People ask me why I’m stepping away from a successful law practice for this role. For me, the answer is simple: Hammond is home, and serving this community full-time is worth every sacrifice.
