Tangipahoa Mosquito Abatement District

Established in 2003, the Tangipahoa Mosquito Abatement District works to protect the citizens of Tangipahoa Parish from mosquitoes.

This week, 15 mosquito samples in our district have tested positive for West Nile Virus. Additional treatments will be performed in the affected areas, weather permitting. We are asking all of our residents to practice basic defense measures to help protect against the disease.

Of the 1,811 samples tested thus far in 2026, 146 have returned positive for WNV. There have been zero reported human cases in our district this year.

Happy World Mosquito Day!

Today, we celebrate British doctor Sir Ronald Ross’ discovery of the malaria parasite in the female Anopheles mosquito.

Dr. Ross’ discovery on August 20, 1897, provided the first evidence that mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans.

This unique celebration gives us an opportunity to share the importance of our daily operations.

𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠!

𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦: Draining the bird bath and kiddie pool will be enough to solve your mosquito problem.

𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: Some mosquitoes can lay eggs, hatch, and survive in as little as one teaspoon of water.

Therefore, this claim is 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞. It is important to drain standing water regularly; just make sure to empty or remove all items that can collect water.

To lower the chances of mosquitoes making your backyard their home:

🦟Remove any tarps, children’s toys, pet bowls, or other items that may collect water.

🦟Frequently empty bird baths and other water-collecting items stored outside. The egg-to-adult life cycle can take about seven days.

🦟If you have bodies of water on your land like a pond or lake, mosquitofish can make an excellent addition to your ecosystem. These fish are known to eat insect larvae. Stop by our office to get some for free! 🐟
