Dear School City of Hammond Families,

Thank you for your continued patience, flexibility, and understanding as we have navigated the circumstances that delayed the start of our school year. We know the past several days have been challenging for many of our families, and we appreciate the support and understanding you have shown.
We are pleased to share our revised return-to-school schedule and our plan to safely welcome our students back.
Friday, August 21 – Staff Preparation Day
There will be no school for students. Our staff will return to their buildings to reconnect, review safety procedures and expectations, and prepare for the return of our students.

Monday, August 24 – Teacher Work Day
There will be no school for students. Teachers will use this day to prepare their classrooms, lessons, and learning environments for students.

Tuesday, August 25 – Districtwide Open House
There will be no school for students during the day.
We invite all students and families to join us for our Districtwide Open House from 4:00–6:00 p.m. at ALL School City of Hammond buildings.
This will be an opportunity for students and families to:
Meet teachers and staff
Visit classrooms and tour the school
Become familiar with arrival and dismissal procedures
Learn about school and classroom expectations
Ask questions before the first day of school
We strongly encourage our families to attend and help our students feel comfortable and excited about returning to school.

Wednesday, August 26 – FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!
We are excited to officially welcome our students back on Wednesday, August 26!
Wednesday will be an early dismissal day. Our focus will be on welcoming students, building relationships, establishing routines, and helping everyone transition back into the school environment.

Thursday, August 27 & Friday, August 28 – Regular School Days
Students will follow their regular school schedules on Thursday and Friday.

We know this is not the beginning to the school year that any of us expected, but our priority throughout this process has remained the same: the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families.
We are grateful for the patience and resilience of our entire Hammond community.
We look forward to seeing our families at Open House on Tuesday and, most importantly, welcoming our students back to school on Wednesday morning.
Thank you for continuing to support one another and the School City of Hammond.

Stay safe, SCH family. We are excited to be together again!

We Lead. TOGETHER.

More information will be shared in the coming days regarding our plans for the remainder of the week and our revised schedule for the start of school.

We know our families have many questions, and we appreciate your patience, understanding, and flexibility as we continue to assess the situation. Please know that every decision we make will continue to place the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families first.

Please continue to stay safe, take care of yourselves and your families, and support one another during this time.
We look forward to welcoming our students back once our schools and community have been fully restored and we can safely move forward together.

School City of Hammond

Dear School City of Hammond Families, Students, Staff, and Employees:

The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priority.

We understand that many members of our school community are still dealing with the effects of the severe weather and the unprecedented circumstances our community has experienced.

After careful consideration, we have made the decision to postpone the start of school for students until Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

There will be no school on Thursday, August 13th or Friday, August 14th. All activities are also canceled.

Monday, August 17, will be a full teacher workday. There will be no meetings scheduled, allowing our teachers and staff time to prepare for the return of our students while also navigating the challenges caused by the severe weather.

We want to extend our sincere gratitude to our city officials, first responders, School City of Hammond Building and Grounds team, and our custodial staff. They have been on the forefront of this effort, working tirelessly to assess our facilities, address concerns, and help keep our schools safe and ready for our students.

We know this has been a challenging and unprecedented time for our community. We hope everyone remains safe and is able to use this additional time to care for your families, address any needs resulting from the severe weather, and prepare for the start of the school year.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support of the School City of Hammond. We look forward to welcoming our students back on Tuesday, August 18.

Sincerely,
