It is with heavy hearts that the Hammond Fire Department announces the passing of retired Assistant Fire Chief Richard “Dickie” Burton.

Chief Burton dedicated over 36 years of service to the Hammond Fire Department, serving our community from 1957 to 1994. Throughout his career, he exemplified the dedication, courage, and commitment that define the fire service.

His years of service touched countless lives, and his legacy will forever remain a part of the Hammond Fire Department and the Hammond community. The traditions, values, and commitment to service that he helped build continue to inspire the firefighters who serve today.

We extend our deepest condolences to Chief Burton’s family, friends, former colleagues, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

Please keep the Burton family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

STRUCTURE FIRE
At approximately 5:55 am, Hammond Firefighters were called for a structure fire behind Chick Fil A on Hwy 190 west. Upon arrival, firefighters found an abandoned house on fire. The fire was quickly brought under control. No injuries were reported.

Since Wednesday May 20th, Hammond Fire has responded to over 105 calls for service that include 7 reported structure fires with 3 of those being “Working Fires”. One of the fires did transport a resident to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries for evaluation.

We want to remind our citizens to ensure they have active smoke alarms in their homes.

STRUCTURE FIRE RESIDENTIAL
At approximately 6:08am, Hammond Firefighters were notified of a structure fire off Washington dr. Upon arrival, HFD found a single wide mobile home with fire showing. The fire was quickly contained and brought under control. No injuries have been reported. The fire is under investigation.
