August 31, 2026, City of Hammond, LA – On August 30, 2026, at approximately 1:00 pm, the Hammond Police Department responded to a reported theft at Piggly Wiggly, located at 18150 Highway 190 East.

Upon arrival, HPD officers learned that a female suspect fled the area after having concealed merchandise then exited the business without paying.

August 19, 2026, City of Hammond, LA – On August 18, 2026, the Hammond Police Department Narcotics Division arrested Devonte West, 30 years old of Independence, and Armada Tate, 36 years old of Hammond, following a tip that the two men were involved in narcotics activities.

During their investigation, HPD detectives learned that West was renting a storage unit in Hammond. Detectives obtained and executed a search warrant for the storage unit, where they recovered several suspected illegal narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and a stolen firearm. An arrest warrant was issued for West, and a case was opened with the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms, and Explosives.

Detectives also learned that West frequently traveled to Texas. They coordinated with ATF personnel in Houston who assisted with the investigation.

Detectives located West as he was returning from a trip to Texas. West arrived at a gas station in Hammond, where he was observed meeting with Tate. Tate was later stopped and arrested on an outstanding warrant, as well as attempting to discard methamphetamine. Tate was found to be on probation through the 21st Judicial District Court.

With the assistance of the Hammond Street Crimes Unit and the Criminal Investigations Division, West was taken into custody at the storage facility. A search of West's vehicle produced approximately five kilograms of suspected methamphetamine and several pills. West was taken to the Hammond City Jail for booking. West was found to be on parole for multiple illegal narcotics convictions. He also had a previous federal conviction for illegal narcotics.

The total amount of illegal narcotics seized during the investigation is estimated as follows:
13.2 lbs of methamphetamine
2.2 lbs of suspected synthetic ma*****na
2200 suspected counterfeit Adderall pills
1200 suspected counterfeit Oxycodone/Hydrochloride pills
6 grams of suspected heroin/fentanyl mixture

Due to West's previous convictions, the amount of illegal narcotics, and the recovery of a firearm, the investigation was forwarded to the United States Attorney's Office for potential federal prosecution.

The Hammond Police Department would like to thank the Baton Rouge Police Department Narcotics Division, the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office K-9 Division, including K-9 Thor, and the ATF Houston Field Division for their assistance in the investigation.

August 14, 2026, City of Hammond, LA – On August 14, 2026, the Hammond Police Department, in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, executed a search warrant at a residence off Log Cabin Lane for Chad Taylor, 20 years old of Hammond, related to the shooting that occurred on Apple Street on August 4, 2026.

Taylor was located at the residence and taken into custody.

During the course of the investigation into the Apple Street shooting, evidence was uncovered supporting Chad Taylor's involvement in another shooting that occurred in downtown Hammond on July 11, 2026.

This evidence also implicated Chad Taylor's brother, Shad Taylor, 20 years old of Hammond, in the downtown Hammond shooting.

Chad Taylor has been booked on the following charges:

1 count of attempted first degree murder
2 counts of illegal discharge of a firearm
3 counts of aggravated criminal damage
1 count of attempted second degree murder
1 count of aggravated obstruction of a highway

Warrants have been issued for Shad Taylor on the following charges:

1 count of attempted first degree murder
1 count of illegal discharge of a firearm
1 count of aggravated criminal damage

"We will not tolerate these types of individuals victimizing our citizens and our city," said Chief of Police Edwin Bergeron Jr. "We want to thank our local, State, and federal partners, especially the FBI, who assisted in the takedown of the suspect this morning."

The Hammond Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating Shad Taylor, who should be considered dangerous.

FINAL UPDATE: All Four Juvenile Suspects Taken Into Custody Following Vehicle Pursuit

Hammond, Louisiana — August 10, 2026 — The Hammond Police Department is providing a final update regarding the vehicle pursuit that occurred on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

The last and final suspect involved in the pursuit has been taken into custody.

Through the course of the investigation, Hammond Police Department officers were able to identify the fourth suspect. After an arrest warrant was obtained and signed by a judge, Hammond Police Department made contact with Chief Suarez of the Independence Police Department regarding the suspect.

Chief Suarez and officers with the Independence Police Department responded to the suspect’s residence and took the suspect into custody within minutes of being notified.

All four suspects involved in the incident were juveniles and have been placed in the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center.

The Hammond Police Department would like to thank the Independence Police Department and the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office for their assistance and cooperation in helping locate and apprehend the suspects.

Hammond Police Department officers will continue to pursue those who commit crimes in our community and will not stop until those responsible are held accountable.

“Let me be perfectly clear—if you come into Hammond and commit crimes, we will find you,” said Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. “We will track you down, we will use every legal means available, and we will not stop until you are in custody. There is no place to hide from accountability in this city.”

PRESS RELEASE

UPDATE: Hammond Police Department Pursuit — August 8, 2026

Hammond, Louisiana — August 9, 2026 — The Hammond Police Department is providing an update regarding the pursuit that occurred on August 8, 2026, involving a reported stolen vehicle.

Three of the four suspects who were in the vehicle have been taken into custody and placed in the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center.

The fourth suspect, also a juvenile, has been identified, and arrest warrants will be sought for his arrest and detention.

At this time, investigators do not believe the fourth suspect remains in the wooded area or is actively roaming the area. However, his current whereabouts remain unknown.

The Hammond Police Department is asking anyone who may have information regarding the whereabouts of the fourth suspect or information related to this investigation to contact the Hammond Police Department.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Hammond Police Department Pursues Stolen Vehicle; Suspects Flee Into Wooded Area

Hammond, Louisiana — August 8, 2026

Members of the Hammond Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Cherry Street and East Charles Street in Hammond for an excessive speed violation. Officers quickly learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen through the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.

As officers attempted to initiate the traffic stop, the driver of the stolen vehicle fled and intentionally rammed a Hammond Police Department patrol unit in an apparent attempt to evade capture. Officers pursued the vehicle northbound on North Cherry Street/Louisiana Highway 1065.

The pursuit continued until the suspect vehicle ultimately crashed into a wooded area north of LA Highway 442.

The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody, as was an additional passenger. Two remaining occupants fled from the vehicle and remain at large.

The two remaining suspects have been identified. The Hammond Police Department, with assistance from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, will continue to actively search the surrounding area in an effort to locate and apprehend the suspects.

All of the occupants involved have been identified as juveniles. Appropriate charges and arrest warrants will be pursued as the investigation continues.

This remains an active investigation. Additional information, including any applicable charges, will be released as it becomes available.
