Thank you to U.S. Senator Cory Booker for taking time during his South Jersey tour to learn more about SJ Connects and the work underway to expand mobility throughout the region.

During his visit to Inspira Health in Mullica Hill, Senator Booker spoke with SJTA Executive Director Stephen F. Dougherty and Vice Chair Barbara Holcomb about the new regional shuttle initiative and the people it is designed to serve.

SJ Connects provides free transportation, connecting residents with jobs, health care, higher education, shopping, government services, and NJ TRANSIT connections.

Routes include:
🚌 Vineland to Cape May Court House🚌 Vineland to Camden🚌 Vineland to Pleasantville🚌 Pureland Industrial Complex to Salem🚌 Route 54/40 Feeder🚌 Burlington County (Beginning September 21)

The program is designed to help bridge transportation gaps between communities and the places residents need to reach.

We appreciate Senator Booker taking the time to learn about SJ Connects and the work being done by the SJTA and our regional partners to expand mobility options throughout South Jersey.

🎀 National Bow Tie Day: 12 Years, 41 Bow Ties and Counting

Today is National Bow Tie Day, and for Dave Zappariello, it's a day worth celebrating.

Why, you ask? For the past 12 years, Dave has worn a bow tie to work.

As the Director of Communications for the South Jersey Transportation Authority, Dave spends a lot of time in suits and at public events. Somewhere along the way, the bow tie became more than an accessory.

It became his signature look.

Over those 12 years, Dave's collection has grown to 41 bow ties. Yes, 41.

And no, he doesn't think that's too many.

There is, however, one very important rule when it comes to wearing a bow tie:
Never wear a clip-on.

Every bow tie Dave wears is hand-tied every morning.

Most people assume tying a bow tie is difficult. But Dave says it really isn't. It took him two days to learn, and he says it quickly became second nature.

That's part of what Dave likes about a hand-tied bow tie. It doesn't have to be perfectly symmetrical. That little bit of imperfection is part of the charm. It proves that you actually tied it yourself.

Not surprisingly, the bow tie has become part of how people recognize Dave.

So today, Dave is celebrating National Bow Tie Day the only appropriate way:
By putting on a bow tie.

And maybe convincing a few other people to give one a try.

There are plenty of neckties in the world.

Dave says there could always be a few more bow ties. 🎀

Back to school means more students are on the move!

As a new school year begins, remember to slow down and stay alert in school zones and residential areas. Watch for children crossing, follow posted speed limits, and be prepared for sudden stops.

Whether you're driving to work, school or wherever the road takes you, let’s make safety part of every trip. 🛣️💙

Transportation Trivia Tuesday

TRIVIA: Why are some roadway exit numbers much higher than others?

ANSWER: Exit numbers generally correspond to the mile marker on the roadway. So, Exit 2 is roughly two miles from the roadway’s starting point, Exit 28 is roughly 28 miles in.

It’s a simple system that helps drivers know how far they’ve traveled and how far they have to go.

How closely have you paid attention to those little green numbers?

Motorist Monday 🚗

Before you drive on the Atlantic City Expressway this week, take a moment to check your vehicle and plan ahead. A few simple steps, like checking your tires, putting your cellphone away, and giving yourself extra travel time, can help make the roads safer for everyone.

Wherever your travels take you, stay alert, drive responsibly, and arrive safely.

The Atlantic City Expressway Goes… to Wyoming?

One of our branded water bottles apparently decided that 44 miles of Atlantic City Expressway (ACX) wasn't nearly enough adventure.

So, it packed its bags, left South Jersey, and traveled more than 2,000 miles to Inspiration Point in Grand Teton National Park - 7,200 feet above sea level. 🏔️💧

For perspective, Atlantic City sits essentially at sea level.

That's a pretty impressive road trip for a water bottle.

We’re not sure what its itinerary looks like from here, but after conquering the ACX and the Grand Tetons, we're beginning to think this bottle may have a more adventurous travel schedule than most of us.

Next stop: Who knows? But if you see one of our SJTA/ACX bottles somewhere spectacular, send us a picture. Apparently, they get around. 😎

From the Atlantic City Expressway to the Grand Tetons… now THAT is some serious brand loyalty.

Although the summer is winding down, there’s still a lot of warm weather left.

This month’s decorated tree at the Welcome Center celebrates “All Things You’re Shore to Love” with a colorful tribute to the South Jersey shore.

From surfboards and seashells showcasing local towns to beach balls, ice cream, umbrellas, mermaids and mini co****le, this tree celebrates the places and memories that make our shore special. 🐚

A special thank you to our Affirmative Action Officer, Amanda Cantell, for bringing this shore-inspired tree to life! Her creativity and attention to detail make each month’s display something special for our employees and visitors to enjoy.

Next time you stop at the Welcome Center, take a few minutes to check it out and see how many South Jersey shore favorites you can spot!

Meet the Crew: Heaven Johnson👋🚌

Meet Heaven Johnson, one of South Jersey Transportation Authority’s part-time SJ Connects drivers!

Heaven joined the SJ Connects team in April after earning her CDL and looking for a new opportunity. She starts her mornings by preparing her bus, checking every detail to make sure everything is ready, and then hitting the road to serve our passengers.

Her favorite route? Vineland to Cape May, partly because she’s a self-proclaimed “beach girl” 🌊 and loves catching the sunrise along the way.

But her favorite part of the job is the people.
“Knowing that I could help somebody… makes me feel good.”

Since SJ Connects is free to ride, Heaven says she loves seeing the relief on passengers’ faces when they realize they can get where they need to go without having to pay for a ride.

When she’s not behind the wheel, Heaven enjoys spending time with family and friends, doing hair, and working on her own handcrafted and aromatherapy business.

And if there’s one thing she wishes more people knew about SJ Connects?
We exist! 🚌

Heaven hopes more people discover SJ Connects so we can continue connecting our communities and helping even more people get where they need to go.

Thank you, Heaven, for being part of the SJ Connects team! 💙
