Union Township, Hunterdon County Office of Emergency Management OEM provides protection through the latest body of knowledge and current Emergency Management practices as set forth in federal, state, and county regulations.

The Union Township Office of Emergency Management,(OEM) focuses on the protection of life and property for all residents, businesses, (including their employees), and the traveling public. OEM personnel provide protection through study, planning and application of all phases of Emergency Management, while concentrating on mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. OEM fosters the "TEAM" appr

oach through education, coaching and partnering with each member. Members include municipal officials, emergency services and all municipal departments as outlined in the Township Code. OEM will provide direction and obtain resources to members of the TEAM in events such as natural and technological disasters. OEM will provide coordination and assistance to police, fire, rescue, emergency medical and municipal government. OEM will achieve a complete integration of Emergency Management through current technologies available, using proven management practices and implementing the incident command system. *A CLUSTER OF STRONG T-STORMS LOOKING MORE LIKELY TONIGHT *

THREAT TIME: THURSDAY 10:00 PM - FRIDAY 2:00 AM

In an unusual setup for NJ, especially in September, we will have a late evening/early overnight threat of severe weather tonight. Despite it being very warm & humid, we won't see much more than an isolated shower or storm this afternoon. If there is one, it could be locally strong, but coverage would be quite limited. The main concern will arrive late this evening as a complex of showers and storms moves out of PA into NJ. While the worst of the storms focus to our south, we are quite likely to see showers and storms for a few hours either side of midnight. Given an abnormally high amount of nighttime energy for storms to work with, damaging wind gusts and hail will be possible along with spotty poor drainage flooding. Thankfully, storms will end in the predawn, and a good part of Friday looks dry.

Today is an interesting scenario for severe weather and thunderstorms. Overall, the background conditions are supportive of storms becoming strong to severe, with gusty winds, hail and even a tornado all possible. Additionally, with lots of moisture in place, we'll have to contend with heavy downpours, and localized flooding, which probably has a slightly greater likelihood of occurrence compared to severe thunderstorms in any one spot. However, storm coverage (especially the stronger ones) is the limiting factor today, as these may prove to be isolated to scattered, as opposed to numerous. The time of greatest concern will be 3 - 7/8 PM, when coverage should be relatively greatest and there still will be enough availability of energy from the daytime. Unfortunately, this will coincide with the PM rush hour before things quiet down later in the evening.

A Flood Watch has been issued for portions of Eastern Pennsylvania (including Philadelphia), northern Delaware, and most of New Jersey. See the attached graphic to see what areas are under the Flood Watch. The Flood Watch is valid from 12 PM Thursday to 4 AM Friday.

Expected rainfall amounts have increased, especially from I-95 and points west. The Slight Risk within the Excessive Rainfall Outlook was pushed east into New Jersey and now includes the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

The threat for severe weather has increased slightly. The Slight Risk within the Severe Weather Outlook was pushed east to now include the I-95 corridor and the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

*Hazardous Weather: Heavy downpours with rainfall rates up to 1 to 3 inches per hour may lead to localized flash flooding of urban and poor drainage areas, creeks, and streams. Scattered severe thunderstorms possible, with damaging winds being the primary threat.

*Locations affected: The areas most at risk for flash flooding and severe thunderstorms is currently projected to be from the I-95 corridor and points north and west.

*Timing: Showers and thunderstorms could begin to develop as early as noon Thursday but the bulk of the activity should be between 2 PM and 10 PM Thursday.

*Impacts: Localized flash flooding may result in road closures and water level rises in local rivers and streams. Isolated damaging wind gusts may result in localized tree damage and power outages.

*Confidence on occurrence: High confidence in the development of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Medium confidence in timing and location of greatest impacts.

The flash flood potential continues to increase, and portions of our area have been upgraded to a MODERATE risk of excessive rainfall (see attached graphic). This means that instances of flash flooding could be fairly widespread and potentially significant within this area. As depicted in the graphic the area within the moderate risk includes Philadelphia extending northeastward into portions of central and northern NJ including Trenton.

Travel disruptions are increasingly likely for the evening commute as some roads may flood later today.
