Dear Hampton County… It’s That Time of Year!

We LOVE that you’re celebrating Independence Day, and we want everyone to have a safe and fun holiday. We also wanted to clear up a few things from inside the 911 Center. 😄

🇺🇸 “I heard gunshots!”
Maybe… but maybe not. Fireworks usually crackle, pop, whistle, boom, and sometimes sound like a grand finale. Gunshots are typically much sharper and don’t come with the sparkle. If you actually witness gunfire, someone is injured, or you believe a crime has occurred, absolutely call 911.

🐶 “The fireworks are scaring my dog.”
Trust us… they scare us too! We’re in a building with no windows, listening to loud booms and trying to figure out if it’s a celebration or an emergency. While we understand it’s stressful for your pets, 911 can’t stop the fireworks. Keep pets indoors, close the curtains, play some music, or check with your veterinarian ahead of holidays if your pet has severe anxiety.

☎️ When should you call 911?
Call 911 if there is:
🚑 A medical emergency
🔥 A fire
🚔 A crime in progress
⚠️ An immediate threat to life or property

📞 When should you use the non-emergency number?
Questions, minor incidents, reports that are not actively happening, or situations that do not require an immediate emergency response are better handled through the non-emergency line.

Our dispatchers are here 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Every unnecessary 911 call ties up a dispatcher who may be helping someone through the worst moment of their life.

Have fun, celebrate responsibly, be patient with your first responders, and remember… not every boom is an emergency… but every emergency deserves an open 911 line.

This Father’s Day, Hampton County 911 Communications recognizes the dads and father figures who spend their days and nights serving others with calm voices, caring hearts, and unwavering dedication.

Whether they are helping someone through an emergency, comforting a caller in crisis, or returning home to their own families after a long shift, these men continue to make a difference in countless lives.

To the fathers in our communications center and throughout Hampton County, thank you for the example you set, the sacrifices you make, and the love you give so freely.

Today, Hampton County Government honors and remembers the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our nation. Their courage, selflessness, and dedication to protecting our freedoms will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, may we also take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this day and remember those who gave everything for our country.

🚨 Traffic Advisory 🚨

Emergency units have been dispatched to the area of Columbia Hwy N and Bo Peep Rd in reference to a reported two vehicle collision.

Please avoid the area if at all possible and allow emergency personnel the space they need to operate safely and efficiently.

Please be advised that emergency units are currently responding to the area of Uncle Jim’s Road and Speed Limit Road due to a motor vehicle accident.

Avoid this area if possible to allow first responders the space they need to safely manage the scene and care for those involved.

If you must travel nearby, please proceed with caution, reduce your speed, and remain alert.

This week, we proudly recognize and honor our very own 911 telecommunicators, the calm, steady voices behind every emergency call. Before the lights and sirens, before help arrives on scene, it is their voice that answers. It is their guidance that brings order to chaos.

Our telecommunicators carry a responsibility that cannot be overstated. They listen when others panic. They act when seconds matter. They provide life saving instructions, reassurance, and direction, all while managing the unseen weight that comes with every call.

This profession requires strength, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to serve. Long hours, missed holidays, and high stress moments are met with grace and professionalism time and time again.
