SAGE III on ISS

SAGE III on ISS NASA's SAGE III is an instrument studying stratospheric aerosols, ozone & water v***r from the ISS.

The Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) is a series of instruments designed by NASA to observe stratospheric ozone, aerosols, and water v***r from space. SAGE III is the newest and most advanced addition to the SAGE family. Instead of flying on an un-manned satellite, SAGE III is mounted to the International Space Station (ISS) where it operates alongside experiments from all over the world in the space-based laboratory.

The 2025 wildfire season in Canada has been long and widespread with over 6.8 million hectares burned as of August 6, 2025, placing this year in the top 5 seasons, but less than half the size of the devastating 2023 season, according to the Canadian Wildfire Information System. Smoke from the fires traveled to the USA, Europe and beyond. The June 2025 release of SAGE III/ISS multi-wavelength aerosol extinction coefficient profiles allows scientists to see what smoke was transported into the stratosphere.

The NASA Student Airborne Research Program - SARP launched ozone sonde balloons this summer that coincided with three SAGE III on ISS measurements of Earth's stratosphere.

A NASA student research program recently took to the stratosphere to make ozone measurements that coincided with events from the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) III on the International Space Station (ISS).
