The Unity Office works to ensure that Hampton will be a city that is welcoming, supportive, and inclusive of all citizens, regardless of race, color, class, religion, age disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity. The Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion's mission is to promote the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion through programs and events that create and i

ncrease opportunities for communities to learn and grow together. By partnering with community members and stakeholders, two citizen-based commissions, a youth advisory group, and internal staff, we provide proactive and reactive support to accomplish the city's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (D.E.I.) This department is the home of two citizen-based commissions: Citizens' Unity Commission (CUC) and Citizens' Engagement Advisory and Review Commission (CEARC). The CUC is the "proactive arm" of the department and was created to promote and sponsor activities, events, and initiatives that bring diverse citizens together and increase awareness and education on diversity-related topics. The CEARC is the "reactive arm" of the department and was created as an advisory body of the Hampton City Council, to provide crisis prevention, management, and communication in the event that a divisive crisis occurs in the City of Hampton.

Happy Juneteenth, Hampton! ❤️🖤💚

Today, we celebrate freedom and reflect on Hampton's extraordinary place in America's journey toward liberation!

At the heart of that story stands Fort Monroe, where in 1861 three enslaved men sought refuge and helped spark a turning point in history. The "Contraband Decision" made at Fort Monroe offered a pathway to freedom for thousands and earned Hampton the distinction as the birthplace of freedom's fortress.

Nearby, the Emancipation Oak stands as a living symbol of hope and progress. Beneath its branches, newly freed African Americans gathered to hear the first Southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.

This Juneteenth, we honor the resilience, courage, and contributions of those who fought for freedom and continue to inspire future generations. 🎉
