In the words of Piast Institute's Executive Vice President, Ms. Virginia Skrzyniarz: "This is long time coming and has not been done before in this "international" format that is totally inclusive and giving a voice to not only to women to nominate other historical figures but to allow men to appreciate and nominate as well! This project is really about having a voice to promote the best of Polish Women and place them in the Polish Women's Hall of Fame! But IMAGINE young Polish Women having one place they can go to discover their history! That is very exciting to me and should be to those with daughters!

There will be so many aspects to this project so please stay tuned for all the roll outs coming soon... But for now celebrate with us, visit the website, begin to think about your nomination, think about the Polish Women in your own life and celebrate them daily, email me ([email protected]) with your comments on this project!

We started this project without any seed money or Institutional support... Proving if you believe in something make it happen... We thank those folks who personally supported the initial portion of development (you can find yourself on the website as supporters) but now is the time for others to step up and support this worthy cause with your voice and your monetary support! Contact me and I promise I will get you too excited about the POLISH WOMEN HALL of FAME!"

A Hall of Fame dedicated to Polish women and their contributions to the world. Nominate someone to the Hall of Fame by emailing the Piast Institute at: [email protected]

FYI: According to dictionary.com, the word "Halloween" is a "direct derivation of All Saints Day" with "All Hallows" in Old English meaning "the feast of the saints."

"Halloween" has also been translated to "Eve of All Hallows," which was a holy day celebrating the day before All Saints Day. All Saints' Day is celebrated the first day of November while All Souls' Day is celebrated November 2.

The Piast Institute is pleased to sponsor a reading by John Guzlowski, a nationally known poet whose latest work Echoes of Tattered Tongues: Memory Unfolded.

The reading will be held at the Hamtramck Public Library May 12, 2016 from 6-8 P.M. There is no admission charge. The program is funded in part by the Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

In prose and poetry Guzlowski tells the story of the survivors of World War II who came to America as Displace Persons often through the experience of his family: his parents taken by the Germans as slave laborers and his sister and himself born in Displace Persons camps in Germany. His work also touches often painful wounds of the police experience of World War II, as this excerpt from his poem on the Katyn Massacre, The Katyn Forest, shows:

Not even the names
of those who died will be remembered…
Their harsh voices and tearing courage
are already lost in the wind

But their true monuments
Will always be there, in the dust
And the grey ashes and the mounds
Settling on the bodies over which
No words were ever spoken
And no tears shed by a crying mother
Or a trembling sister

Guzlowski’s searing and evocative poetry pulls us into his story as witnesses to terrible times past. Czeslaw Milosz, winner of the Nobel Prize and one of the greatest poets of our time says of Guzlowski’s work: “exceptional … astonished me. Reveals an enormous ability to grasp reality.”

Dr. Guzlowski will be available to sign copies of his book which will be available for purchase after the reading.

We look forward to seeing you there!
