9:20 AM UPDATE: --Flash Flood Warning extended; multiple road closures reported due to flooding--

The National Weather Service has extended a Flash Flood Warning for Kaua‘i through 12:30 p.m. The warning may be extended, dropped or modified as conditions develop.

Kaua’i police and Kaua’i Fire Department personnel have evacuated residents from the Wailua River View Estates. Residents from lower Haleilio Road are also being evacuated.

Kūhiō Highway in the vicinity of the Wailua Bridge has reopened. Kaua’i police, however, strongly advise motorists not to drive through the area unless absolutely necessary, as heavy ponding is still occurring along the Wailua stretch of Kūhiō Highway. Please drive slowly and carefully if you must drive at all.

Kaua’i police have closed multiple roadways due to flooding:

• South end of the Kapa’a Bypass Road is completely flooded and impassable;
• Haleilio Road in Wailua;
• Kuamo’o Road in the vicinity of Coco Palms;
• Keapana Road in Kapa’a;
• Rice Street in Līhu’e;
• Kamalu Road in Wailua;
• Weliweli Road in Kōloa; and
• Kūhiō Highway in the vicinity of the Hanalei Bridge

A Flash Flood Warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring in streams, roads and low-lying areas. Do not cross fast-flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot.

Ponding, low visibility and other hazardous driving conditions are expected. If you must drive, please do so with extreme caution.

For updates on road conditions and closures, please call 241-1725. Please do not call Kaua‘i police 911 unless you have an emergency.

For weather updates call the National Weather Service automated weather line at 245-6001, or visit the NWS website, www.weather.gov/hawaii.

To sign up for Blackboard Connect, the county’s emergency notification service, please go to the county’s website, www.kauai.gov, or call the Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency at 241-1800.
