On Tuesday, September 1, members of the Houghton Rotary “After 5” club staffed a booth at the Farmer’s Market on the Houghton Waterfront. They enjoyed the beautiful weather, engaged attendees, and promoted Rotary membership, our Brewfest fundraising event, and the upcoming World’s Largest Polio Walk.

Ann Campbell, our RYLA and Interact Coordinator, also spoke with attendees about RYLA and Rotary Youth Exchange. One young woman from Minnesota was delighted to see our Rotary sign and told us about her life-changing experience as an Outbound to Brazil!

Houghton Rotary “After 5” does a small service project each month; this month, the group decided to promote Rotary at the local farmer’s market. (While we were there, we even collected $40 for polio eradication.)

The next Houghton Farmer’s Market is on September 22 from 3-6 pm.
Rotary will be there!

We ❤️ our visitors! Today, we got to see Joanne Shea Low Bollinger, better known as Jo-Jo to her local club Lewiston-Auburn Rotary. Jo-Jo is on her way back to Maine and we were delighted that she joined us for lunch! We got to hear a bit about her travels across the US and Canada, and she got to hear the behind-the-scenes planning for our Club's biggest fundraiser, coming up on September 26th: Keweenaw Brewfest 2026!

Keweenaw Brewfest 2026 is Houghton Rotary Club's biggest fundraiser of the year, bringing in funds that are re-injected into the Keweenaw through projects and support to other community programs. Each year, we choose one major beneficiary that can be eligible to receive matching funds from District project funds, in order to double the impact. In 2026, proceeds from Keweenaw Brewfest will support Copper Country Angel Mission and the renovation project for the second story of their building located at 433 Fifth Street in Calumet.

Copper County Angel Mission is a 501(c)3 non-profit promoting community welfare by serving those in need with compassion and dignity. For more than 20 years, their services have included a resale store, a food pantry, and providing additional services such as transportation to medical appointments, and assistance in preventing utility shut-offs. On Thursday, August 20, The Rotary Club of Houghton welcomed our 2026 Inbound Rotary Youth Exchange student Deby Cruz. She was met by two of her Host Families as well as Houghton Rotarians and Rotary Youth Exchange staff.

Deby arrived in Houghton after a long journey from Guatemala City, Guatemala. She will be attending Houghton High School and hopes to join the volleyball team and participate in other school activities.

Rotary Youth Exchange became an official Rotary program in 1974. Each year, clubs around the world welcome students to be part of their communities. The program is designed to foster international peace and understanding, one student at a time.

What the program offers to and asks of participants — an openness to new ideas and experiences, a willingness to adapt and to gain new perspectives, and an opportunity to make new friends and learn new ways of living — are the same values that define Rotary itself.

Each year, The Rotary Club of Houghton offers opportunities for local High School students to be a part of this life-changing program.

We were delighted last week to host Kiersten Birondo, Executive Director of the Rozsa Center. Kiersten talked passionately about making the Rozsa an accessible place for our community to explore new genres and gather for community events. One of the successes of the Rozsa in recent years has been the pay-as-you're-able program, ensuring that EVERY community member has access to the arts. Our Rotary club is proud to support the Rozsa through volunteer ushering over many years, and we are excited to help with the newest season. We are all about Service Above Self. Thanks to our nimble crew that dedicated a couple hours on a Saturday morning to tidy up the Pilgrim River stretch of US41. It was also the Rotary International Day of Service, and we are humbled and awed to know that there were thousands of clubs across the globe chipping in to make the world a better place.
