Only YOU can prevent (garbage truck) fires!

Today, not one but TWO of our Solid Waste vehicles caught fire because of improperly disposed items (hot coals and pool chemicals, specifically). Thankfully, no City workers were injured and the flames were largely contained.

However, we'd like to take this opportunity to remind both our residential and commercial customers to PLEASE do the following:

• Allow charcoal and fireplace ashes to cool completely for several days before disposal
• Place cooled ashes in a metal container away from combustible materials
• Dispose of household batteries and hazardous chemicals through approved recycling or hazardous waste programs
• Never place flammable or reactive materials in your trash container

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping keep our staff, equipment, and community safe.

🎉 PROMOTION ANNOUNCEMENT 🎉

Please join us in congratulating Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Rowe on his promotion to Deputy Fire Chief with the City of Hanford Fire Department.

Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Rowe began his fire service career in 1991 as a Volunteer/Paid Call Firefighter and has dedicated more than three decades to serving his community and advancing the fire service profession. He graduated from the Columbia College Firefighter Academy in 1992 and went on to earn an Associate of Science Degree in Fire Technology and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fire Administration with a minor in Fire Investigation.

Chief Rowe began his career firefighter service with the Willow Oak Fire Protection District in 1995. From 1996 to 2000, he served with the Selma Fire Department before joining the City of Hanford Fire Department in October 2000 as a Firefighter. Throughout his career with the City of Hanford, he has promoted through the ranks of Firefighter, Engineer, Captain, and Battalion Chief before being appointed Deputy Fire Chief in April 2026.

In addition to his operational leadership experience, Chief Rowe is a Certified Fire Investigator and currently manages the department’s Fire Investigation Team. Chief Rowe holds numerous professional certifications, including Firefighter I & II, Company Officer, Chief Officer, and Fire Instructor. He is recognized for his commitment to firefighter safety, professional development, emergency response excellence, and mentorship of future fire service leaders.

We are proud to recognize Chief Rowe’s dedication, leadership, and service to our department and community. Congratulations on this well-deserved promotion!

It’s Not Worth It, Hanford!

That’s the message from the Hanford Fire Department as the Fourth of July holiday and illegal fireworks season fast approaches. From boots on the ground to blades in the sky, the department stands ready to enforce its rules against illegal fireworks.

Chief Perkins says it best: "They are extremely dangerous, for all the fun you see it's not worth it, it's not worth it for us to risk someone else's livelihood, someone else's life on a short-term amount of fun."

A couple of reasons to think twice before shooting off these dangerous devices this year:
-Drone technology to help track down offenders
-Change to the Hanford Municipal Code allowing the City to impose up to $10,000 in administrative fines per day ($1,000 per firework)

🇺🇸 Memorial Day 2026 🇺🇸

The Hanford Fire Department pauses to honor and remember the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness secured the freedoms we cherish every day.

We stand in gratitude for those who gave everything, and we keep their families, friends, and fellow service members in our hearts.

May we never forget the true meaning of Memorial Day.

These 2 firefighters got a chance to learn new skills from some of the best in the game The skills learned this weekend will be shared back home to increase our service to the community.
