illnesses.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency! Call 9 1 1.

🔥☀️ EXTREME HEAT WATCH: SUNDAY – TUESDAY ☀️🔥
While recent temperatures have been relatively mild, a significant warming trend is expected to develop this weekend and continue into next week. An Extreme Heat Watch has been issued for much of the region, including Northeast Missouri. Conditions may become dangerous for anyone spending extended time outdoors. The National Weather Service advises residents to begin preparing now and have a plan to stay cool if warnings are issued.

Now is the time to prepare before the heat arrives.
✅ Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
Limit alcohol and excessive caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration.

✅ Limit Outdoor Activities

Schedule outdoor work, exercise, and recreation during the early morning or evening hours.
Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.

✅ Check on Others

Older adults, young children, individuals with chronic medical conditions, and those without reliable air conditioning are at greater risk during extreme heat.
Check on neighbors, relatives, and friends, especially those who live alone.

✅ Know the Warning Signs

Heat exhaustion symptoms may include heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, weakness, and headache.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately if someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, or has a very high body temperature.

✅ Never Leave Children or Pets in Vehicles

Temperatures inside a parked vehicle can become deadly in minutes, even with windows cracked.

✅ Have a Cooling Plan

If your home is not adequately cooled, identify air-conditioned locations where you can safely spend time during the hottest parts of the day. An Extreme Heat Watch means now is the time to prepare.

The Hannibal Emergency Management Agency will continue monitoring conditions and will share additional updates as the event approaches. As we move from pleasant summer temperatures into potentially dangerous heat, a little preparation now can help keep you, your family, and your pets safe.

With high temperatures in the forecast, Hannibal Emergency Management wants to remind everyone to stay safe during the summer heat.
Heat safety tips:
Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. Electrolyte beverages can also help protect against heat stress.
Apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every two hours.
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing.
Take regular breaks in the shade.
Don’t let the heat catch you off guard — stay hydrated, stay covered, and check on family, friends, and neighbors.
