We’ve hit the halfway mark of our 2026 Appalachia trip—and what a journey it’s been so far! 🌄⚡
Students are currently immersed in one of the most historically significant energy regions in the country, gaining a firsthand look at how coal has shaped both the nation and the communities of West Virginia. From its powerful legacy to its lasting effects on the environment, economy, and daily life, they’re uncovering the many layers of this story.
At the same time, the focus is firmly on what comes next. Through conversations with local leaders, organizations, and energy experts, students are exploring how the region is evolving—embracing a mix of energy sources like natural gas alongside renewables such as wind, solar, and geothermal. 🌬️☀️
This experience is all about connecting the past, present, and future of energy—while challenging students to think critically about the path forward.
More reflections and behind-the-scenes moments coming soon… stay tuned! 🚀

Wondering what the real magic of our Sustainability Immersion Trips is? It’s pretty simple: reflection.

On our trips, we have the privilege of meeting with so many extraordinary partners, all who generously share their time and stories with us. Spending time in reflection, connecting the dots among these stories, is what transforms students’ perspectives and makes the learning stick.

We’re still beaming thinking about our Italy Sustainable Food Systems Immersion Trip this past winterim. After several days in Rome learning about urban and international food systems, we zoomed our lens in to experience local, place-based farming firsthand. From thousand-year-old olive trees to making mozzarella with the morning’s fresh milk, we saw close-up how food and farming practices rooted in a landscape can sustain both people and the land. We’re especially indebted to our hosts, Darcy and Adolfo, who welcomed us into their home and guided us through their highly diversified farm system.
