HANOVER — A 75-foot-long, 51-ton vehicle that is
used to test the strength of pavement is scheduled to
be moved on Tuesday morning from the Cold Regions
Research and Engineering Laboratory on
Lyme Road to a staging area on Route 120 to be
readied for its trip to a university research center in
New Jersey.
Called the Heavy Vehicle Simulator, the 12-footwide,
12-foot-tall rig is expected to leave the north
side of the CRREL campus at 9 a.m. and travel
south along routes 10 and 120 for roughly three
miles to a destination in Hanover, where a crane will
be used to load the vehicle onto a specially adapted
trailer.
The trailer will carry the simulator to its final destination,
Rowan University’s Center for Research
and Education in Advanced Transportation Engineering
Systems in Glassboro, N.J.
“The Heavy Vehicle Simulator is typically used
for accelerated pavement testing and is designed to
simulate 20 years of data within as few as three
months while simulating loads from 4,500 pounds
to 22,500 pounds for wheeled vehicles including
a i r c r a f t ,” CRREL said in a news release.
CRREL said it is moving the rig in coordination
with Hanover’s Public Works Department and the
Hanover Police Department. Hanover Town Manager
Julia Griffin said on Saturday that she was not
aware of the planned move, but noted that the path
would almost certainly take it through the traffic circle
on Lyme Road, “which will be interesting,” she
said.
