🇺🇸 Remembering Mogadishu — October 3–4, 1993
During Operation Gothic Serpent in Somalia, U.S. forces undertook a mission to capture key associates of warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. After two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down, the mission became a desperate overnight effort to reach and rescue their fellow service members. Eighteen Americans gave their lives, and many more were wounded.
The Battle of Mogadishu was more than a headline or a scene in a film. For those who served there, it was a profound test of courage, loyalty, and sacrifice—and a loss carried long after the battle ended. The survivors returned home bearing memories, injuries, and grief that many would carry for the rest of their lives. Their families, too, lived with the lasting effects of that night, supporting loved ones while carrying burdens that were often unseen.
VFW Post 9582 honors the fallen, the survivors, and the families who stood beside them and endured the lasting cost of their service. We remember the courage shown in the face of danger, the bonds that held service members together, and the lives forever changed by what happened in Mogadishu.
Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸
