“The role of libraries will continue to expand, but to do that well, they’ll need sustainable funding, strong partnerships and the flexibility to respond to local needs. Public libraries are constantly adapting to serve their communities, but that work requires consistent support from the state, county, local municipalities, and community members.”

— Melissa Adams, executive director of the Reading Public Library

It's bell time in Hanover.

As part of America250 | HANOVER, a one-of-a-kind Liberty Bell will be installed near the rear entrance of the Guthrie Memorial Library-Hanover's Public Library Thursday, July 30 at 11 a.m. in a public-invited ceremony. The bell is one of seven that York County commissioned from local artists as part of Bells Across PA. Each hand-painted bell showcases a unique aspect of York County’s history.

Hanover's bell, titled "Building Community," was designed by artist Mary Moores and features iconic Hanover-area symbols in primary colors.

Mary said the bell represents, “Hanover as a kaleidoscope that is ever-changing” with the top of the bell having PA's keystone and reinterprets a hex sign "to recognize Hanover's heritage and role as a pivotal state in the formation of the U.S.”

Also, a black rose pays tribute to the Hanover’s royal heritage, while centrally placed ears of corn highlight the region’s strong agriculture roots. One of the bell’s most endearing features is a band of brightly colored handprints, created using the hands of current residents.

The Guthrie Memorial Library staff is working on a "library of things" that patrons can check out, including tools and fishing rods. along with other items. The idea is growing in popularity.

Libraries across the country are lending American Girl dolls, original artwork, musical instruments and ghost-hunting kits to help patrons save money and share resources.

Since the announcement of the sale of the former 1906 Hanover Saving Fund Society building, some have wondered about the future of the Historical Society's use of the library's space.

A Historical Society representative noted at the public July Board of Governors meeting that the Society intends to continue leasing space at the library.

Questions regarding that topic should be directed to the Society and or the Borough.

And if they don’t have what you’re looking for, feel free to use the hold or interlibrary services, which are free of charge.
