Emergency preparedness saves lives and we have two great opportunities coming up for older adults and caregivers in Hanover County!

Join the Hanover Council on Aging for a FREE educational event, “Emergency Preparedness and Prevention."

Sessions will be offered twice:

Wednesday, July 29, 3:00–4:30 p.m. at East Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad, 8105 Walnut Grove Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23111

Wednesday, Sept. 16, 10:00–11:30 a.m. at Montpelier Recreation Center and Library, 15302 Clazemont Road, Montpelier, VA 23192

Behind every 9-1-1 call is a team working together to keep our community safe. Our Fire-EMS IT and Operations Divisions are conducting in-service training to stay prepared for whatever comes next.

During these sessions, crews and IT staff collaborate using GIS (Geographic Information System) maps that highlight hydrants, access points, hazards, and critical infrastructure. By layering real-time data, command officers can track units, monitor incidents, and choose the safest, fastest response tactics.

Training with real-world scenarios strengthens route planning, improves scene safety, and supports better decision-making. This same GIS data also helps us prepare for storms, large events, and high-risk areas—so we are ready before emergencies happen.

This work depends on both frontline experience and technical expertise. We are proud of our teams’ commitment to continuous learning and the partnership that turns technology into faster, safer outcomes for the community.

Last night at 10:14pm, Hanover Fire-EMS units were dispatched to the 14000 block of Elletts Crossing Road, for a reported residential structure fire.

Upon arrival, our personnel found a single family home with smoke coming from all sides and fire through the roof. 11 units responded, and the incident was brought under control at 11:13 pm.

The cause is currently under investigation.

Thank you to the Metro Richmond Flying Squad for their assistance.

Hanover Fire-EMS encourages all residents to check their smoke detectors monthly, change their smoke detector batteries every 6 months, and recommends smoke detectors be replaced at the manufacturer’s recommended life cycle.

Hanover County Fire-EMS has officially launched its EMS Whole Blood Program, marking a major advancement in pre-hospital emergency medical care. Through partnerships with Chesterfield Fire and EMS, Virginia State Police, and Inova Blood Donor Services, our providers can now administer whole blood in the field to critically injured or ill patients suffering severe blood loss.

Hanover is among the few EMS agencies in Central Virginia to offer this lifesaving capability, helping stabilize patients and improve outcomes when minutes matter most.

We are grateful to our Board of Supervisors, Hanover County Government, and our regional partners for helping make this program possible.

This program reflects Hanover County Fire-EMS’s continued commitment to innovation, regional collaboration, and exceptional patient care.

This evening at 6:29pm, Hanover Fire-EMS units were dispatched to the 12000 block of Lees Lane, for a reported residential structure fire.

This past weekend, units from Station 8 (Montpelier), along with Special Operations units from Station 4 (Doswell) and personnel from Goochland County Fire-Rescue , responded to assist with a horse in distress. Julian, a 3-year-old male, had gotten himself into a precarious position and required careful coordination to safely free him.

Thanks to the teamwork and expertise of our crews, Julian was safely rescued and is doing well.

Great work by all involved, and a reminder of the diverse calls our department is ready to handle at any time.

Hanover Fire-EMS is proud to recognize Firefighter Hannah Nelson for completing her probationary period and earning her black shield. Firefighter Nelson has worked diligently to complete her probationary books and processes. She is assigned to Station 3, serving the citizens of Eastern Hanover. Congratulations!

Tips for a safe 4th of July!

• Very hot and humid conditions expected with temperatures near 100°
• Drink plenty of water and limit time in the heat
• Take breaks in the shade or indoors
• Check on neighbors, children, older adults, and pets

Fireworks Safety:

• Safest option: attend a professional
fireworks show
• If using consumer fireworks where legal:
• Keep children away from fireworks (even sparklers)
• Keep fireworks away from dry grass and flammable materials
• Have water or a hose nearby
• Never try to relight a “dud” firework
