The Town of Hanson is located in the south shore area of Massachusetts, approximately 30 miles south of Boston. The population of Hanson is approximately 9,800 people. The Hanson Police Department consists of the Chief of Police, a lieutenant, 19 full-time, sworn, personnel, 7 part-time police officers, 4 civilian dispatchers, 4 part-time dispatchers and the Executive Assistant to the Chief of Pol

ice. The Hanson Police Department is a non-Civil Service Police Department and was reorganized by Chapter 255 of the Acts and Resolves of 1981 by the General Court. We are a progressive police department, always striving to provide the best quality of life for our residents and professional, courteous service to the public. The Department responds to approximately 14,000 calls for service annually. Detective Paul O’Brien retired Friday from the Hanson Police Department after 29 years with this department and 32 years in law enforcement.

To say that he is dedicated to this department and this town is an understatement. “Obie,” as he is known around the station and throughout town, truly loved Hanson and loved being a police officer.

Obie rose through the patrol ranks and became the department's Detective in 2011. Between his years on patrol and his time as Detective, he touched countless lives. He was the guy that even the subjects of his many investigations greeted with a simple, “Hey Obie.” It was truly remarkable.

When anyone mentions they work for Hanson PD, one of the first things often heard in return is, “Oh, I know Obie.” His connections were countless, and it's a testament to the impact he made during his time here. His empathy, compassion, and the respect people have for him run deep throughout our community.

Obie’s knowledge of people, policing, and the countless tools he has in his toolbox are not easily acquired and certainly cannot simply be replaced. They say that when someone retires, another warm body fills the spot the next day. That simply won't be the case with Obie. He leaves behind shoes that cannot be filled, and he will be greatly missed by this department.

In retirement, Obie plans to spend more time with his family. His wife and daughters are his world, and the time he spent away from them over the years while serving this community was a sacrifice that can never truly be repaid. Fortunately for us, he's not disappearing completely. Obie will remain with the department in a part-time capacity, so if you see him out on the roadway waving you through traffic, be sure to give him a "Hey buddy!" as you drive by.

Every department needs an Obie.

For nearly three decades, Hanson was fortunate enough to have one.

Congratulations on your retirement, Obie, and thank you for your 32 years of dedicated service, your friendship, and the immeasurable impact you've had on this department and community.

UPDATE: East Washington Street has reopened to traffic following the earlier motor vehicle crash involving a utility pole.

At this time, traffic is limited to a single lane, and Hanson Police Officers will remain on scene directing traffic until the roadway can be fully restored to normal operations.

🚨ROAD CLOSURE🚨

East Washington Street is currently closed between Winter Street and Whitman Street due to a motor vehicle crash involving a vehicle that struck a utility pole.

Please avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

The roadway will remain closed until further notice while emergency crews work on scene.

Traffic Alert: Route 58 between Main Street and Union Street is currently being detoured due to a motor vehicle crash.

UPDATE: This good boy was reunited with his owners shortly after we posted about him….much to the dismay of his many potential adopters, K9 Ziva, and a few of our Officers, he is safely back where he belongs. 😉

FOUND DOG 🐾

This pup was found on Main Street near Bryantville Center. He is wearing a Carhartt collar but does not have any identification tags.

If you recognize this dog or know where they call home, please contact the Hanson Police Department so we can help reunite him with his owners.

Full-Time Certified Police Officer

The Hanson Police Department is accepting applications for the position of Full-Time Police Officer. The Town offers a competitive starting salary ranging from $62,588-$72,000, that with educational incentives and a comprehensive benefits package, can range from $82,340-$101,780.

Minimum Requirements
Candidates must:
• Have successfully graduated from a Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) Basic Police Officer Academy in accordance with M.G.L. Chapter 41, Section 96B
• Be POST certified, or have the ability to obtain certification
• Be at least 21 years of age on the appointment date
• Be a Massachusetts resident upon appointment
• Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
• Hold a valid Massachusetts driver’s license on the appointment date
• Have the ability to possess a Massachusetts License to Carry Fi****ms
• Statutorily qualify for appointment; no person convicted of a felony or any offense punishable under M.G.L. Chapter 94C is eligible

Prior to Appointment
Selected candidates will be required to successfully complete:
• A comprehensive background investigation
• Medical examination
• Psychological screening
• Commonwealth of Massachusetts PAT fitness test
• Any additional requirements necessary to perform the duties of a police officer

Last evening, at approximately 6:30 PM, Officers were dispatched to the area of 200 Woodbine Avenue for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a utility pole.

Upon arrival, Officers found an SUV towing a camper that had crashed into a telephone pole. The SUV struck the pole first, followed by the camper. Upon impact, the camper disintegrated into multiple pieces, scattering debris across the roadway and nearby properties.

Prior to the crash, a nearby resident reported that she had been walking her young child on the street just past the crash site when she heard the collision occur behind them moments later.

Officers made contact with the operator, Steven Ward of Whitman, and conducted an on-scene investigation. During the investigation, Officers determined that Ward was under the influence of alcohol and drugs while operating the vehicle. Officers also discovered that registration plates from an unregistered and uninsured vehicle had been affixed to the camper. Additionally, Ward was found to be in possession of several knives that are considered dangerous weapons under Massachusetts law.

Ward was placed under arrest at the scene and charged with Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, Operating Under the Influence of Drugs, and Operating After Suspension, along with several additional violations.

McQuarrie's Towing responded to remove the damaged vehicles. Due to the extensive debris field, a dumpster was required to assist with cleanup of the roadway and surrounding yards. Woodbine Avenue remained closed for approximately one hour while crews completed cleanup operations.

Steven Ward is being charged with the following violations of Massachusetts General Law:
Operating Under the Influence, Liquor
Operating Under the Influence, Drugs
Operating a Motor Vehicle w/Suspended License, Subsequent Offense
Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle
Unregistered Motor Vehicle, 2 counts
Uninsured Motor Vehicle
Marked Lanes Violation
Carrying of a Dangerous Weapon, 9 counts

UPDATE: Road has been reopened to thru traffic.

Traffic Advisory

Hanson Police and Fire are currently on scene at the Pleasant Street T crossing for a train vs. motor vehicle collision.

Pleasant Street will remain closed until the investigation is complete. Motorists are asked to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

We are thankful to report that all parties involved appear to be okay, although understandably shaken up.

We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation as emergency personnel work to safely investigate and clear the scene.
