Wednesday during the 4-12 shift, Detective Maliff, while investigating another case, observed a motor vehicle believed to be operated by Carlos Cruz (41, of Brockton), an individual known to have two outstanding warrants. Detective Maliff was also aware that Cruz’s license to operate had been suspended by the RMV for being a Habitual Traffic Offender. Additionally, the vehicle was observed to have an equipment violation.

As a result, Detective Maliff conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle. Upon approach, the operator stated that he did not have his driver’s license on his person but verbally identified himself as his brother and provided a corresponding date of birth. Detective Maliff observed the operator to have a distinct neck tattoo known to belong to Carlos Cruz and not his brother.

After confirming information through the RMV and engaging in a brief conversation with the operator, Carlos Cruz admitted to providing officers with a false name.

Carlos Cruz was subsequently placed under arrest for his outstanding warrants as well as Operating a Motor Vehicle After Suspension. During the arrest, officers located several small cut baggies and a cut straw on Cruz’s person, both commonly indicative of illicit narcotics use. Following further investigation officers located approximately 1.7 grams of what is believed to be Cocaine/Fentanyl.

Carlos Cruz was charged with the following violations of Massachusetts General Law:
- Possession of Class A Drug
- Carrying of a Dangerous Weapon
- Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License (Subsequent Offense)
- Motor Vehicle Operator Refusing to Identify Self/False Name
- Motor Vehicle Lights Violation

These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Hanson Police Department wants to take a moment to acknowledge the sacrifice made in the line of duty by Firefighter Robert Kilduff Jr. of the Boston Fire Department. Firefighter Kilduff gave his life in the protection of others, making the ultimate sacrifice in service to his community.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the entire Boston Fire Department brotherhood during this incredibly difficult time.

Hanson Police Officers have been busy this week between community events and an uptick in call volume, which we attribute to the sneak peek of summer. While all of that was happening behind the scenes, Officers were also completing their mandated fi****ms training on the range.

This year, they were able to complete that training on a new and improved — and safer — range that came together through a lot of hard work, sweat equity, and generous donations.

We want to take a moment to thank everyone who helped make this possible for our Department. Once again, our community showed just how much they care and support the men and women of the Hanson Police Department.

First and foremost, thank you to our Range Officers, Officer Leo Arseneau and Officer Corey Arseneau, who had a vision and a plan, and then rolled up their sleeves and got down and dirty to bring it to life.

Thank you as well to the Hanson Highway Department and Hanson Water Department for helping move a tremendous amount of dirt and turning the space into a blank canvas for this project.

We would also like to thank R.J. Messina Inc. for donating the millings, Dandel Construction for donating the delivery of the concrete barriers and the equipment needed to move them, McQuarrie Towing & Recovery for supplying tires for the backdrop and metal fabrication of targets, President Titanium for providing the steel for advanced target training, and Robert Brown Construction for assisting with laying and grading the millings.

This project is another example of what can be accomplished when a community comes together to support one another, and we are incredibly grateful for everyone who played a role in making it happen.
